Never did I imagine the Boston Celtics would be able to grab highly regarded Brad Stevens away from Butler University. For the past six years, Butler has been blessed to have one of the greatest young coaches in college basketball. Danny Ainge and the Celtics pulled it off. The attraction of coaching one of the supreme franchises in the history of sports, a six-year deal worth $22 million dollars, and a bright future was enough to lure him away. Brad Stevens is the perfect fit for this team and I strongly believe that he will win multiple NBA titles with the Boston Celtics. He will be one of the best coaches of all- time. Call me biased, it doesn’t matter. Having said that, it is absolutely premature for me to make that statement about a coach with only six years of college head coaching experience. But he seems to have all the tools to become one of the greatest. Stevens coached Butler to a 166–49 record, giving him THE HIGHEST winning percentage of .772, higher than any college coach through their first six seasons. Stevens led Butler to back-to-back NCAA Division I National Championship games in 2010 and 2011 including a 12-5 NCAA tournament record. What stands out to me is that Butler only had one NBA player, Gordon Hayward. To me, this means one thing; Brad Stevens’ coaching was the biggest reason why Butler has seen success. While that seems like an obviously statement, it is not anymore. I do not believe that John Calipari is a good coach; he is simply the best recruiter. When you get the best players, you win. Brad Stevens has managed to recruit players who are not the most highly regarded and coach them to become a championship caliber team. It is silly to think that Stevens won’t be able to control Rajon Rondo. Stevens just said in his introductory press conference that he loves Rondo and is his biggest fan. I fully expect Rondo to stay with Boston and work closely with Stevens in a player/assistant coach role. Also, Stevens will be able to relate to and work closely with the younger Celtics players such as Jared Sullinger, Avery Bradley, Fab Melo and new draftees The Celtics will give Stevens everything he needs to win a title quickly. The Celtics have unbelievable owners who care about winning. Rebuilding over the next few years and tanking for Andrew Wiggins is not an option. It’s not the Celtics way. Brad Stevens is a brilliant hire by the Boston Celtics for many reasons, but mostly for his ability to unite his team, his analytic approach to the game, the respect he has received from his coaching peers, and his style of defense. Bold Brad Stevens Predictions: He will win 40 games in his first season and reach the playoffs. He will never go a year without missing the playoffs, especially in the weak Eastern Conference. He will win one NBA title in his first six-year contract and three more before he retires. The Celtics will not rebuild, they are up to something big. -Kovner
