The list of Blue Jays whose seasons will end on the disabled list continued to grow Tuesday with slugger Edwin Encarnacion and all-star reliever Brett Cecil added to the infirmary. But one player who looked destined to join them Colby Rasmus continues to swing the hottest bat in the Jays’ lineup. After spending a month on the disabled list with a strained oblique Rasmus hit his third home run in as many games Tuesday while R.A. Dickey pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Jays to a 2-0 shutout of the New York Yankees. Dickey had five runners aboard and needed 51 pitches to get through the first two innings but he settled in to retire the next 15 straight needing just 50 pitches over his final five frames. Dickey was throwing harder than he has all season reaching back to throw his 80-m.p.h. knuckleball with regularity and getting late action on the pitch to earn eight strikeouts on the night and lower his ERA to 4.21. “It was nice to continue to grow” he said. “These are important games for me at least I see them as that. We’re going to be competing next year and it’s important to try to get it right now.” Yankee veteran Andy Pettitte held the Jays to just six scattered hits but the one to Rasmus was costly as the centre fielder launched his 21st homer of the season deep into the second deck. Rajai Davis added a solo homer of his own off Yankees reliever Shawn Kelley in the seventh. The Yankees — who remain in the wild-card hunt thanks to the Jays whom they have thoroughly whipped this season — have a tough road ahead if they hope to remain in the race. With the loss they fell to 3.5 games behind the Texas Rangers for the AL’s second wild-card spot.
