Derek Jeter, a hero to many, made a phone call to Donna Soto, the mother of a real hero, the day Donna’s daughter was laid to rest. Donna’s daughter is Victoria Soto, the 27-year old teacher from Sandy Hook Elementary School who was killed in last Friday’s massacre.  Victoria was shot and killed while shielding her students from the piece of trash who tore apart Newtown, Connecticut. According to the family, no one reached out to Jeter to let him know that the 27-year old Victoria was a big Yankees fan.  “Vicki loved the Yankees — that was part of her eulogy,” her cousin James Wiltsie said Wednesday night. “No one in the family reached out, so (Jeter) must have heard about it and … reached out.  It was a surprise and unexpected. Donna was ecstatic over it and very happy. She spoke to him for quite some time.” Vicki’s sister Carlee tweeted the family’s excitment. “Derek Jeter just called my mom!!!!! Thanks Vicki, she needs it thank you @yankees this meant a lot to my mother and all of us.” “Nothing is going to fix the fact that she had to bury her daughter today,” said Wiltsie. “But I’m happy that it brought some comfort … People like Jeter have reached out. It brings some comfort to know that people recognize Vicki as a hero.” New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz met with the family of Jack Pinto, a six-year old who was also killed on Tuesday.  Pinto was buried wearing Cruz’s jersey. It’s a real shame that it was under these circumstances that the victims’ families had to meet their children’s heroes, but these are just two more examples of first rate athletes, a future Hall of Famer in Jeter’s case, being first class people.
