Some players just can’t seem to stay healthy, and Jeremy Affeldt admits he is one of those players. What makes his injury history so fascinating is the way in which he hurts himself. Last September, the Giants reliever had to shut it down for the season after he injured his hand trying to separate frozen hamburgers. Affeldt suffered another injury in his home this past weekend, this time to his right knee.

Affeldt told reporters that he returned home Saturday night after a game against the Padres and was greeted by his 4-year-old son, Walker. As he walked through the door, Affeldt says Walker leaped off the couch and into his arms. That’s when he felt a pop in his knee that would later be identified as a sprained MCL.

“My son’s usually pretty happy to see me,” Affeldt explained. “He jumped off the couch and ran over and I squatted down to give him a hug and when he jumped I kind of caught him weird. My knee just kind of shifted in a little bit and I felt some pressure on it and felt a little bit of a pop so I put him back down. But I didn’t think it was that big of a deal because it wasn’t really that sore — it was just a little stiff.”

As you can see from the video above, Affeldt was a good sport in talking about the injury. He also mentioned how the trainers are probably sick of having to deal with injuries he suffers at home. Fluke injuries happen, they just don’t typically follow professional athletes in the way that they haunt Jeremy Affeldt.
