With all the big names on Yankees rosters over the past decade, you would think that my favorite player would be an All-Star, an MVP, a Hall Of Famer, or something close to it. No. My favorite player during the 2000s was none other than the Melkman, Melky Cabrera. I loved his enthusiasm and his penchant for getting clutch hits in big situations. Out of the 15 or so walk-off hits the Yankees had in 2009, Melky was responsible for several of them. That year, I took to calling him Baby Clutch, since his older teammate, Derek Jeter, was referred to as Captain Clutch. I remember that, when he was traded to Atlanta at the end of the season, I was already going through some tough personal problems, and it devastated me to see my favorite player leave. What bad timing.Atlanta released him after a tough 2010 season. Last year he landed with Kansas City and re-dedicated himself, having such a good season that he was traded to the Giants this past Winter. Which brings us to this month. Melky i...

On Those Melky Cabrera Extension Talks

As of this writing, Melky Cabrera leads the major leagues in hits; frankly, nobody’s even all that close, as Melky has a seven-hit advantage over the next-best in hits, Derek Jeter (67). Overall, Melky is hitting a red-hot .369/.412/.556 on the season, good for a .417 wOBA and 168 wRC+. It’s nearly June, and here we are, with Melky Cabrera in the top-ten in the majors in wRC...

Cabrera's 51 May hits match San Francisco record

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By JANIE McCAULEY AP Baseball Writer Melky Cabrera is a new marketing phenomenon: ''Got Melk?'' He is piling up nicknames nearly as quickly as he is piling up hits. Melk Man. Melky Way. And the old standby from his Yankees days, Leche - milk in Spanish. Cabrera has quite the following at AT&T Park, where several...

Three-hit game gives Cabrera an S.F.-record 50 hits in May

For the San Francisco Giants, the month of May used to belong to Mays. Now it belongs to Melky. Melky Cabrera had three more hits Tuesday in the Giants' 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks, giving him 50 for the month, the most ever by a San Francisco player. Willie Mays had 49 in May 1958. The San Francisco record for any month belongs to Randy Winn, who had 51 hits in September...

Caption: Derek Jeter as Colonel Kurtz in production of ‘Apocalypse Now’ (pic)

“I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That’s my dream; that’s my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor… and surviving.” Seriously, that pic looks like a still straight out of the final scenes in Apocalypse Now. Derek Jeter looks positively Brando-esque. Okay, okay, actual caption: Derek [...]

Saunders still chasing first win over Giants

Melky Cabrera's hot hitting has been a welcome surprise for the San Francisco Giants, who have won eight of their last 12 games in large part because of his current tear. Ryan Vogelsong has been impressive as well recently. Vogelsong takes the mound Tuesday night when Cabrera and host San Francisco look to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks for a fourth consecutive time. Cabrera...

Melky’s Impressive May

With the Giants’ scheduled off-day today, Melky Cabrera‘s impressive May draws to an end. Through 29 games this month, Melky came to the plate 129 times; 51 of those plate appearances ended with a hit. With those 51 hits, Melky led the majors and in fact had 11 more hits than any other player — although a few players have a chance to shorten that gap today. Additionally, he...

SF Giants Rumors: G-Men Own D-Backs At Home, Vogelsong Stellar, Cabrera Passes Mays

Another home game against the D-Backs and another win for the San Francisco Giants. The Giants have won 24 of their last 32 games against the D-Backs at AT&T Park. It was another stellar performance by starter Ryan Vogelsong, but he received a no decision. Vogelsong tossed 7 innings and just allowed 1 earned run. The bats didn’t come around till the bottom of the 8th. I...

Giants 3, Diamondbacks 1

Melky Cabrera got his 50th hit of the month to spark the go-ahead rally and Buster Posey drove in a pair of runs to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. Posey drove in Cabrera with an RBI double in the sixth inning to tie the game and followed Cabrera's single in the eighth with a sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Theriot...

D-backs can't slow Giants, lose 2nd straight

Cubs-Giants Preview

Melky Cabrera is coming off one of the best months for a San Francisco Giants hitter since the franchise made its way from Manhattan to the Bay Area. He'll try to continue his hot hitting into June while helping the Giants send the Chicago Cubs to their longest road losing streak in six years Friday night. Cabrera had 51 hits in May to tie the most by one Giants player in a...

SF Giants Rumors: Bonds Back At AT&T Park, Zito Bounces Back, Cabrera Moving Up The Hits List

The big fella (Barry Bonds) attended the San Francisco Giants Memorial Day game against the D-Backs. Bonds (Home Run King) has made it clear that he would like to come back to the Giants organization in some sort of coaching role.   “I gave my life and soul to that game. That’s what’s heartbreaking. That’s the hard part of it,” Bonds said. “My (reputation) was kind of...

Postgame Wrap: Melky Mays

The Giants offense was a lumbering, sputtering, defeated group of gents today. For seven innings anyway. But when it counted, the heart of the order stepped up their game and gave us all kinds of seeing-eyeness and no-swing-itis, and it pretty much worked out. Scoring three runs behind a grit-tastic no-decision from Ryan Vogelsong is probably frustrating for Ryan, but we’ll take...

More Reasons For Despair

I'm about 35 feet off the ground with one arm around a creaky Mexicale Nationale Telephone pole, and the other tapping out this text with my I-phone leashed to a hot wire cable, so I can't send any classy and supportive photos. However, the amature draft is near, and it is guaranteed that anyone we sign will never make it to the Yankees. Our number 1 three years back is...
