The Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen received a shake-up Tuesday when Matt Guerrier was placed on the disabled list due to right elbow tendinitis.

Because Guerrier hadn't pitched since April 18, the move was made retroactive April 19.

To take Guerrier's place on the roster, the Dodgers recalled left-hander Michael Antonini from Class AAA Albuquerque. Antonini, 26, was acquired from the Mets for shortstop Chin-lung Hu in December 2010.

The inflammation in Guerrier's elbow was such that it didn't hurt him while pitching but would ache the next day.

"We would have used him (Monday) night if we had to because we were a couple of guys down, knowing that he was probably going to be DL'd at the end of the day," manager Don Mattingly said. "Our biggest problem with Matt is he doesn't know if he throws one day how he will feel the next day."

Guerrier is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in seven appearances for the Dodgers this season. He said the elbow injury began during spring training.

"With tendinitis, it's one of those things where you get it loose and it feels good, but after that it aches. Getting loose the next day was harder the day after throwing," he said. "You start to put other guys in the 'pen in tough positions when I need a day off after every game I pitch. I thought it was the best for me and the best for the rest of the guys (to go on the DL)."

Mattingly said Antonini, who has been a starter in the minors, will pitch in long relief and in situations in which a left-hander is needed. In four games, three starts for Albuquerque this season, Antonini was 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA.
