Ivan Nova continued to be victimized by the long ball Friday night, but he made the pitches when he needed to, helping the New York Yankees beat the Oakland A's, 6-3, at the O.co Coliseum.

Nova gave up three runs over seven strong innings, two of them on solo homers by Josh Reddick and Kila Ka'aihue. Nova has now allowed 12 home runs in nine starts, the most on the staff.

"I'm still getting home runs, still making mistakes," Nova said. "But you know, one thing, I have to forget about that today. We win, and I've got to enjoy the win and keep working hard and try to do better next time."

Nova wasn't in much trouble during his outing Friday, working out of a second-and-third, no-out jam in the fifth while allowing only one run. Aside from that, he didn't allow a runner to get past first base, the only damage coming on the two solo shots.

"Leaving the ball up and making the same mistake, throwing the wrong pitch at the wrong time and the hitters are getting really comfortable," Nova said. "It's something I've got to keep working on, and hopefully it stops right there."

Nova had given up five runs or more in four of his previous five starts, so the final line was a good sign for the Yankees. The fact that Nova wasn't hampered by a minor hamstring issue was also welcome news for the Yankees.

"He's won a lot of games for us the last two years and we want to get him on a roll," manager Joe Girardi said. "We think it's important for him to get on a roll the way he was last year. It was a good start for him tonight."
