Both Hunter Pence and Marco Scutaro went 1-for-4 on Thursday, but what magnificent 1-for-4s they were for the San Francisco Giants. Since arriving in trades in late July, both have been RBI machines, and that talent was on display again in a 7-3 win over the Diamondbacks. During a six-run second inning, both hit two-run homers. Scutaro, acquired from the Rockies, has 41 RBI in 56 games while hitting .361 as a Giant. Pence still has a low average in a Giants uniform (.223) since the Giants got him from the Phillies, but he has 39 RBI in 53 games. That's 80 RBI from two hitters in two months. One day after Buster Posey became the first Giant since Barry Bonds in 2004 to collect 100 RBI, Pence reached 98 RBI, combined with the Phillies and Giants. As for Scutaro, he has a 15-game hit streak during which he's batting .452. Compared to the rival Dodgers' steep financial commitments in several trades for marquee players, the Giants are paying mere pennies to Penc...

SF Giants Rumors: Zito, Posey, Scutaro, Pence, Etc

The regular season is slowly coming to an end, and the final home game of the regular season was played today at AT&T Park for the San Francisco Giants.   Pitcher Barry Zito picked up his 14th win of the season, and the Giants have now won the last 10 Zito starts. I would say he’s going to be the number 4 starter in the playoffs, with Ryan Vogelsong being ready to come out...

Giants dress their rookies in spandex suits for hazing (Pictures)

The humility continues. With all the hazing we have seen throughout baseball since rosters expanded at the start of September, the challenging task for teams now is to come up with a unique way to embarrass their rookies. The Giants did their best earlier this week. As you can see from the photo above that SFGate.com’s The Splash blog shared with us, the Giants made their rookies...

Buster Posey Injury: Giants' Catcher Hit in the Throat

Buster Posey may have lost his voice, but he won't lose playing time.  The San Francisco Giants catcher was hit in the throat by a pitch that battery-mate Ryan Vogelsong bounced in the dirt last night. Posey remained in the game and says he will play today. The incident happened in the second inning of last night's game against the San Diego Padres and was a scary...

Giants Wilson says he's ahead of schedule in rehab

San Francisco Giants right-hander Brian Wilson is scheduled to throw Oct. 19 for the first time since Tommy John surgery, and the always-confident closer insists he will be full strength by spring training. Wilson, the 2010 major league saves leader with 48, spent his third day on the field Thursday doing agility drills and light baseball work stopping balls rolled his way. He...

D-backs look to take rubber match from Giants

After being left off the postseason roster for the San Francisco Giants' 2010 World Series run, Barry Zito will be included on this year's playoff team. Bruce Bochy has yet to announce his postseason rotation, but if Zito continues to pitch like he has over the past few weeks, a playoff start seems probable. In the Giants' final home game before the NL division series...

MLB Rumors: No-Brainer For Giants To Leave Melky Cabrera Off 2012 Playoff Roster

The San Francisco Giants have already clinched the National League West division in 2012, signaling that they are going back to the postseason after taking one year off from the Major League Baseball Playoffs. Clinching the division instead of a wild card berth guarantees they will play more than just one game. And if they go past the first round and play more than five...

These Saber-Savvy San Francisco Giants

The Giants? They’re just a bunch of stat geeks. Look at some of the aspects of their play on the field, and it’s clear that this is not a club that sticks only with tradition. Talk to Bobby Evans, Vice President of Baseball Operations, and you get a sense of a team with a strong process that includes inputs from both the old and the new school of baseball. And this isn’t some...

Giants 7, Diamondbacks 3

Zito (14-8) won his fourth straight start and sixth consecutive decision since a loss Aug. 2. The 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner with Oakland has his most...

Bringing Back The Melk

There are more than a few national writers who have been self-righteous about never wanting to see Melky Cabrera anywhere ever again. There’s been at least one local writer who’s criticized the Giants for not letting Melky come back. They are both right.  And that’s why this is such an uncomfortable issue. The Giants have to make this stand for baseball reasons, because...

Posey, Molina look to make National League history

Pop quiz time. Who was the last National League catcher to win the MVP award? Mike Piazza? Gary Carter? Nope....you have to go all the way back to 1972 when Johnny Bench won his second award in three seasons. And how about the last National League catcher to win the batting title? Get Piazza's name out of your head, everyone, you have to go all the way back before World War II...

Cain pitches, hits Giants past Diamondbacks

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Matt Cain pitched seven innings and had two hits and an RBI to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 6-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. Brandon Belt added three hits, Pablo Sandoval singled twice and drove in two runs, and Marco Scutaro extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games while helping Cain to his career-best 16th win. It...

The Second Wild Card Gave Phillies Fans a Good Run

By July 31, 2012 the Phillies unloaded starting outfielders Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence, effectively conceding that the group of players the Phillies had were unable to win.  A few days later Joe Blanton went out the door as well, and the Phillies gave Jim Thome to the Orioles even before that.  The second National League Wild Card, however, gave Phillies fans plenty of...
