Many argue Sandy Koufax as one of the greatest pitchers of all-time. He dominated the National League as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. He baffled batters, especially the final five seasons of his career where his WHIP was below 1.00 a game. That’s insane for a starter, in any era. Oh, his final two seasons, he pitched in 335.2 and 320 innings. He didn’t show any signs of slowing down, but then retired. But it took some time for Koufax to get to that point in his career, the first half of his career was necessarily pedestrian, but it was nothing close to what he would become. The Dodgers showed patience with him, and they had good reason to based upon an early scouting report from his high school days. They knew they had a star on their roster. Here is a copy of the actual scouting report via ESPN: Nothing below an A-. More impressive? Averaging 16 strikeouts per game as a high school kid. The most interesting part of the remarks section has to be that Koufax was not interested in pro ball until he graduated from the University of Cincinnati.
