New York Yankees 4 — Detroit Tigers 8   Yankees were out-hit in today’s 8-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.   Phil Hughes was brought in to make his first start of the regular season. An error by Eduardo Nunez’s replacement, Jayson Nix, opened the game, a tell-tale sign of bad things to come. Former Yankee Austin Jackson would score on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. The Yankees got the run back in the top of the second when Vernon Wells opened with a solo home run, his second of the season. Former Tiger Brennan Boesch hit a triple into right field and with no outs, it seemed like the ideal situation to add more runs on the scoreboard. Francisco Cervelli would attempt to bring the run in with a fly ball to right field but Torii Hunter made up for the triple with a perfect throw to home, preventing the run from scoring and turning it into a double play. Lyle Overbay would follow up with a double but would be stranded on second. In an inning with a home run, triple, and double, the Yankees were only able to score one run. An unfortunate result of an ideal inning. Phil Hughes would respond well and hold the potent Tigers offense off of the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Austin Jackson would open the fifth with a single, Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera would hit a double and a single, respectively, for two runs and would end Hughes’ day. At 87 pitches, Hughes would exit with a runner on second. Boone Logan would get a second chance to get Prince Fielder after surrendering a home run to the slugger yesterday. Fielder would succeed to a lesser extent against Logan with just a single. Victor Martinez would bring in the run with a sacrifice fly to right field and Dirks would knock Logan out of the game with a single. Phil Hughes would end with four innings of work, giving up four runs, three unearned, on eight hits with four strikeouts. Boone Logan gave up one unearned run on two hits while getting one out. David Phelps came in for relief and didn’t fare well either. The first batter he faced, Jhonny Peralta, singled in a run before Phelps could end the inning. The four-run fifth inning featured three Yankees pitchers and six hits. The offense made a rally in the sixth inning that began with patience at the plate with a walk of Robinson Cano and Kevin Youkilis. Travis Hafner would knock starting pitcher Max Scherzer out of the game with a broken-bat single to center field to score a run. The first reliever out of the Tigers bullpen, Al Alburquerque, would walk the first batter he faced. The hardest hit baseball of the inning would come in the next at-bat when Brennan Boesch hit a laser, caught by Prince Fielder and turned into an unassisted double play, putting the inning in a much different light for the Yankees. Lyle Overbay would hit a single to right field to bring in two runs to finish the three-run sixth inning. Following a rally that brought the deficit to just one, Phelps would need to pitch well and keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. A pair of singles and a walk would load the bases for Prince Fielder. A force out and a single would bring in two runs, turning the momentum back to the Tigers. The Tigers would score one more run in this game and the Yankees would be unable to rally against the struggling bullpen of the Tigers. The Tigers out-hit the Yankees, by 11 hits. The first three batters in the Tigers lineup (Austin Jackson, Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera) went a combined 10 for 12 with seven runs scored.   Win – Max Scherzer (1-0) Loss – Phil Hughes (0-1)   Notables Yankees *Vernon Wells – 1 for 3, R, BB, Solo Home Run (2) in the 2nd, RBI (4) *Lyle Overbay – 2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI (4) Tigers *Miguel Cabrera – 4 for 4, 2 R, BB, 2B, RBI (6) *Andy Dirks – 2 for 4, 2 RBI (2)   Current Yankees Record: 1-4 (Streak – L2)   Get your Yankees Tickets from our friends at TiqIQ.
