This weekend saw everyone glued to their computer screens as the lovely ladies of Invicta FC once again battled it out in the cage in an effort to show the strength of Women’s MMA. What better to prove that Women’s MMA is far more than a gimmick with a solid card from top to bottom, some great finishes and an internet stream that couldn’t uphold due to the large amount of MMA fans logging on. That said, this weekend there is only 3 stars to be given away, otherwise we’d just write up the entire card. While extremely difficult to pick, the following were stand outs of the night and we look forward to Invicta FC 3 in October. 3 stars - Sara McMann The fight that had many in the MMA world polarised as to who actually won may be the trump card in Invicta’s pocket. A rematch would bring eyes to computer screens, so if they do actually remake this fight, Invicta FC better be prepared. With both McMann and competitor Shayna Baszler excellent in their own fields of the ground game, the choice to stand up for the majority of the fight really allowed for the girls to open up and swing for the fences. McMann showed patience when caught on the ground during the second round and successfully utilised her skill to get herself out of trouble. With a dominating third round, in which McMann was able to takedown Baszler twice and getting over the top of her competitor, McMann proved to be a force in WMMA and will look to contest an Invicta FC title in the future. 2 stars - Amanda Nunes In one of many submissions of the night, Amanda Nunes was able to overcome a late change in competitors with Raquel Pa’aluhi in for an injured Milana Dudieva, to pull out a rear naked choke submission win in the first round. Overall Nunes looked calm as Pa’aluhi aggressively played out her gameplan, at times looking to herself be at risk of a submission until an error allowed her to get on top of her competitor for the first time in the bout and get the win with an easy transition to the back.
Be sure to keep watching Nunes, she will be a real threat to the upcoming Invicta FC title and was listed as one of the five possible opponents for Sarah McMann here on hov-mma.
1 star - Carla Esparza Esparza’s competitor, Sarah Schneider actually had the control of the bout for the majority of round 1, however it was at the 2:13 mark where the fight started to go Esparza’s way with a stuffed takedown attempt. From here it was all downhill for Schneider as Esparza gained momentum, being as dangerous with her ground and pound on the floor as she was in the stand up, pushing Schneider against the cage. Round 2 started off where round 1 left off, with Esparza moving forward chasing down her competitor and it wasn’t too long until Ref Big John had seen enough, calling the TKO at 4:29. Esparza is definitely one to look out for in the future.
