Amico followed up his original report today:As for the rumors involving the Cavs, the Boston Celtics and Paul Pierce, sources confirmed the Cavs have indeed expressed an interest — but the talks have yet to reach the level of seriousness conveyed by some reports. The Cavaliers are reportedly willing to give up both of their second-round picks for Pierce.Following the departure of coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Celtics are looking to gut the roster and shed salary, making Pierce and forward Kevin Garnett (and possibly even point guard Rajon Rondo) available. Word is, however, that Pierce wants to play for a contender, making the Cavs hesitant to be overly aggressive in their pursuit of the 14-year veteran.Aside from the emotional trauma that trading away the Truth would cause, I like this deal a lot for the Celtics. If my understanding of the deal is correct the Celtics would acquire both of the Cav’s second round picks this year (meh), which are picks 31 and 33 and practically first round picks (good!), in a “weak” draft (bad), but one potentially full of good shooters at the end of the first round (not so bad, can’t go wrong picking up two shooters that late). In addition the Celtics would receive a massive trade exception which they could use to sign a free agent like Josh Smith (yes I know, groan away, do you have a better idea?).I couldn’t find anything concrete on either the Wolves or the Bucks rumors. Pierce to the Wolves makes a lot of sense to me, I think he’d fit the offense nicely and spend a lot of time at the two (where Brandon Roy would have been last season) operating as a floor stretcher. The Wolves intend to make the playoffs this year and the addition of Pierce as a veteran scoring option could help them do just that. Garnetts ties to Minnesota add another interesting wrinkle to this trade, especially after Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Garnett could join the Timberwolves front office in a ceremonial role after he eventually retires. Could we see both Garnett and Pierce ending up in Minnesota? I highly doubt it (especially given the difficulties of making the trade work financially), but I’ll allow Tom to dream. The Bucks rumor makes less sense to me. Then again, the only real news I’ve heard out of Milwaukee this offseason is that they tried to ink Monta Ellis to a lucrative extension (baffling) and that Monta turned it down (even more baffling). Like the Wolves rumor there’s not much of substance here, but if Ainge is conducting a fire sale every rumor is worth keeping an eye on.The Celtics have six days to make at least one decision about Pierce’s future, after June 30th his contract for next season becomes guaranteed.
