Celtics assistant Mike Longabardi has accepted an offer to take a similar position in Phoenix, a source tells the Globe. — Baxter Holmes (@BaxterHolmes) June 22, 2013 Longabardi was Doc Rivers' defensive coordinator in Boston. — Baxter Holmes (@BaxterHolmes) June 22, 2013 Longabardi began his career as an assistant coach for the men's basketball teams at Pfeiffer University, Adelphi University, Lafayette College, as well as Towson University. He was on the coaching staff that led the Lafayette Leopards to a Patriot League title and an NCAA Tournament berth. Longabardi broke into the pro coaching ranks with the Houston Rockets.. He was the assistant video coordinator for a year before moving up to the video coordinator for 2 years and then became an assistant coach for four years. He then joined the Celtics as an assistant coach prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. In his first seasons with the Celtics, he was helping out Tom Thibodeau, the defensive mastermind of the Celtics championship run in 2008. When Thibodeau left after 2010, Longabardi was named the defensive coordinator for the team to fill the void left by Thibodeau's departure. With all the drama surrounding the coaching position for the Celtics, I can't say as I blame the assistant coaches for jumping ship and taking other jobs if they are offered. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
