Two days ago, Doc Rivers seemed quite confident in the Boston Celtics’ chances of keeping Ray Allen. Today, not so much. (Dan Patrick Show via ESPN Boston)

“I don’t know,” Rivers said. “We’re working hard. He has a lot of options and that’s the bad news for us. It’ll be interesting. I wish I had a feel on it. Usually I do. But I can tell you in this one I don’t.”

Rivers said he spoke to Allen yesterday and plans to speak to him every day for as long as the world’s most prolific 3-point shooter remains a free agent. But Allen is still reportedly traveling to Miami on Thursday to visit the Heat and to Los Angeles on Friday to visit the Clippers. He is willing to be wooed by an outside team, even though the Celtics can offer the most money and a very nice role (if not a starting one).

If Allen leaves, the Celtics will find themselves in a difficult place — trying to chase a small contingent of talented free agent shooting guards without much money to do so. As of right now, cap space is a possibility — but when you add contracts for Jeff Green, Brandon Bass and/or Greg Stiemsma, it’s not probable. Jason Terry could possibly be interested for the mid-level (but is reportedly likely to let Dallas match any offer he receives), O.J. Mayo is supposedly out of Boston’s price range, and meanwhile Allen’s return is looking more important not just because he can still shoot the leather off a basketball but also because there are precious few attractive alternatives to back up Avery Bradley at shooting guard.
