Doc Rivers‘ favorite quip, whenever a reporter asks him about an injured player’s condition, is “You know ‘Doc’ is just a nickname, right?”
Shaquille O’Neal may want to co-opt his former coach’s phrase for his own devices: “You know ‘Big Aristotle’ is just a nickname, right?”
Reader’s Digest apparently did not get the memo. In its “Quotable Quotes” section in the June issue, the magazine printed a saying once tweeted by Dr. O’Neal, Ed.D., only the Digest must not have been aware that writing something on Twitter is not the same as coining a phrase.
“Excellence is not a singular act; it’s a habit. You are what you repeatedly do,” O’Neal wrote, according to the Digest.
Well, O’Neal did say that, but it did not originate with him. In fact, it was Aristotle — the Greek philosopher, not the one who wore No. 36 for the Celtics — who said, “You are what you repeatedly do. Excellence is not a singular act; it’s a habit.” Not only did O’Neal not make up the motto, but he also got it backward.
Reader’s Digest printed a correction in the July edition. As for any future “Quotable Quotes” features, we’d like to advise the magazine ahead of time that O’Neal’s signature yell, “Can you dig it!” is from the movie The Warriors and was not invented by the Big Cochise. Also, he’s not really made of steel and he never moonlighted as a genie.

The Celtics have told Shavlik Randolph that they are not picking up his option, Randolph's agent tells the @BostonGlobe.— Baxter Holmes (@BaxterHolmes) August 1, 2013
The Celtics made a move to save roster space, not picking up Shavlik Randolph's option.
Randolph quickly became a fan favorite after a few good games towards the end of the regular season. That said, keeping...
TELL ME I WON'T
Chris Paul reportedly threatened to leave the Clippers and sign with the Rockets when the Doc Rivers trade talk initially broke down.
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Sometime in the coming months, likely in October, the Boston Celtics will almost certainly announce that Rajon Rondo has been named the 15th captain of the storied franchise.
Taking the torch from Paul Pierce...
The deed is done. According to ESPN Insider, Jeff Goodman, the Celtics have informed Shavlik Randolph that they will not be picking up his team option for the 2013-14 season. Although I'm surprised it took until nearly 6:00 this evening, Boston's waiving of Randolph shouldn't come as a shock. Had the Celtics picked up the big man's $1.1 million option they would...
This offseason for the Boston Celtics has been quite eventful, but it did leave many questions for the organization. Some of the biggest questions coming from the fans are these: 1. Who is the late game closer? 2. Who will bring the intensity on deffense? 3. Who will be able to get a much needed bucket? The list could surpass those few questions by a mile, but there is one question...
The NBA free agency period is dying down, so it time to look back at each team who they signed. Also many trades went down, which I will also recap below.
Free Agent Signings
-Agreed to three-year, $6 million deal with C Vitor Faverani
-Agreed to a deal with rookie Phil Pressy
- The Boston Celtics traded Kevin Garnett with Jason Terry and Paul Pierce for MarShon Brooks...
To be honest, I’ve haven’t opened a Reader’s Digest in sometime but when Shaquille O’Neal gets accidentally quoted instead of a philosophic legend, I have to write about it. In the June issue of Reader’s Digest, the below quote was seen in the Quotable Quotes section of the magazine: As noted in the title of this post, Shaq was actually paraphrasing philosopher Aristotle...
Celtics rookie big man Kelly Olynyk is coming off an eye-opening performance in the Orlando Summer League a good sign for the Boston Celtics squad that have been short of good signs lately.
But now comes a less favorable sign from the seven-footer the Celtics drafted 13th-overall out of Gonzaga in the 2013 NBA Draft – Olynyk is battling plantar fasciitis.
Plantar fasciitis a...
To tank, or not to tank. That is the question.
Ever since the 2013 season ended it seems as though two different schools of thought have emerged from Celtics fans. Those who feel like the team should "tank" 2013-14, doing what it takes to lose games and ensure a top prospect in a loaded 2014 draft; and those who shudder at the mere thought of going through another season...
Boston must decide today whether or not to cut Shavlik Randolph, or his $1.1 million contract becomes fully guaranteed for next season. No word yet on any decision from the C's. Keeping Randoplh would give the Celtics 16 players, 4 power forwards, and a payroll that continues to rise above the salary cap and luxury tax threshold. I want him anyway, they can figure out that...
July 31st. The day synonymous with the Major League Baseball trade deadline, where clubs on the fringe of contention look for one final piece that could make them a true championship caliber team.
Six years ago, the Celtics took a page from baseball's book and transformed their franchise on July 31st, dealing five players and two first round picks to the Timberwolves for Kevin...
The Doc Rivers to the Clippers deal was on and off, several different times before it was finally agreed to.
What finally nudged the Clippers over the hump, and allowed Donald Sterling and management to pull the trigger on the deal?
Well if you believe Bill Simmons and the crew over at GRANTLAND, then it was a threat from star point guard Chris Paul that finally pushed the Clippers...
Remember those rumors about Chris Paul and Dwight Howard talking about teaming up somewhere next NBA season? Apparently that was closer to happening then one might think. Per ESPN’s Bill Simmons, Chris Paul informed the Clippers he was planning on signing with the Houston Rockets after talks broke down between the Clippers and Doc Rivers.
The Clippers ended negotiations with the...
Dwight Howard bolted the Los Angeles Lakers for the Houston Rockets, and the perception continues to be that Howard left because he didn’t like head coach Mike D’Antoni‘s system. Well, apparently Howard wasn’t the only L.A. basketball player to desire to leave if he didn’t get his coach — only this one got his way.
Chris Paul threatened the Clippers that he would leave...
