Rajon Rondo allegedly got into a fight early Saturday morning. And by “fight” I mean somebody tried to punch him, he Matrixed the punch, and the fight ended before it really even started.

Officers called a flagrant foul on a 31-year-old Haverhill man who police say took a swing at Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo early yesterday during an appearance at a downtown dance hall.

There were no free throws in Lowell, though, just a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct for Eric Valarezo, 31.

Officers working details and patrolmen assigned downtown were already at Brian’s Ivy Hall, 74 Merrimack St., yesterday about 1:45 a.m., as a packed event featuring Rondo began to empty out.

Officer Michael Kandrotas noticed a scuffle, and learned that someone “took a fighting stance and threw a punch” at the Celtics all-star and his entourage, which included fellow NBA players Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks, former Celtic Nate Robinson and Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies.

A Boston Globe report cites the bar owner saying Rondo was pretty shy, didn’t sign any autographs or take any pictures, and sat in a corner drinking Fiji water (!) all night. Rondo’s crew included bodyguards but nobody in the Rondo entourage seemed aggressive at any point in the night, according to the club owner.

Valarezo said otherwise, claiming that Rondo started the fight by pushing him. That doesn’t sound much like Rondo, unless Valarezo looked like Kirk Hinrich.

This Valarezo must be a little cuckoo. If I saw Rondo surrounded by an entourage featuring Josh Smith (huge), Nate Robinson (former Pac-10 football stud) and body guards, not to mention a 30-rack of Fiji water, starting a fight is the last thing I’d do.
