The Buffalo Bills apparently wanted a little more flexibility at wide receiver entering Sunday's season opener, so they brought a fifth wideout back onto the active roster.

The Bills signed Ruvell Martin to serve in the reserve role. Martin caught seven passes for 82 yards in 14 games in 2011. For his career, the 30-year-old has 72 catches for 1,088 yards and seven touchdowns over 68 games.

To make room on the roster, the Bills put cornerback Ron Brooks on injured reserve. He can rejoin the active roster after eight weeks.

The Bills surprisingly kept only four true receivers on cutdown day last week – Stevie Johnson, Donald Jones, David Nelson and T.J. Graham. Quarterback Brad Smith can also play wideout, but he has a groin injury that may keep him out of Sunday's game against the New York Jets.

Also Tuesday, the Bills signed defensive tackle Jay Ross to the practice squad. He was cut Friday and spent 10 weeks last season on he Bills' practice squad.

The Bills return to practice Wednesday.
