Down and Distance:
Cam Newton, the Falcons fan? (AP Photo)
As any football fan out there will tell you, it’s hard to stop rooting for your childhood team. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is no different.
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Newton rooted for the nearby Atlanta Falcons growing up. Newton’s teenage years occurred during an extremely exciting time in Atlanta when Michael Vick was tearing up the league with his rocket arm and blazing speed. Little did Newton know that he would one day join Vick as a fellow number one overall pick in the NFL.
Naturally, you would imagine that Newton gave up his love for his hometown team considering he now plays for one of their biggest rivals, no? Think again. Newton told D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he still roots for his Falcons 50 weeks out of 52 in every year.
“It’s always a heavily critiqued game,” Newton told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution of the rivalry matchup. “I’ve always been a Falcons fan, and I’m still a Falcons fan except for those two times a year.”
This seems to be an offseason where many players are being much more open with their fandom of other NFL teams. Colin Kaepernick famously posted an Instagram photo of himself with a Miami Dolphins hat, and current Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan posed with an autographed Luke Kuechly jersey, supporting a fellow Boston College player even though they are on rival teams.
Personally, I think the unapologetic support of other teams and players on rival teams among NFL players is warming to see. The NFL isn’t a cutthroat business to everyone. When push comes to shove, they have to figure out what side they are on, but I see nothing wrong with players showing their support for another team. In some respects, the NFL could use more of that fraternal spirit between players and teams.

Kenjon Barner was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the 6th round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Before we take a look at what the future may hold for Barner, let me remind you of what he did while at Oregon. As a true freshman in 2009, Barner rushed for 366 yards on 61 attempts and three touchdowns. He also returned one kickoff for a touchdown. As a sophomore in 2010, Barner rushed for...
The Carolina Panthers are located in Charlotte, North Carolina, but that didn’t prevent Nike from putting the Panthers logo and “NC” on the state of South Carolina. You would expect something like this from an off-brand company, but not a major company like Nike. How does something like this not get checked?
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick caused quite the stir earlier this month when he was seen rocking a Miami Dolphins hat and later mocked fans for having an issue with it. Now, Cam Newton is sure to have infuriated Carolina Panthers fans with his own show of affection for an opposing NFL team. Newton, [...]
After last night’s not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin case down in Florida, Falcons wide receiver Roddy White tweeted that the jury should go home and kill themselves.
Roughly 12 hours later, White apologized by posting the tweet below.
I understand my tweet last nite was extreme. I never meant for the people to do that. I was shocked and upset about the verdict. I am sorry...
QB Cam Newton (Carolina)
Newton was noticeably better in the 2nd half of last season, with 1964 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions, all while rushing for 394 yards and 4 touchdowns. Heading into his 3rd season in the league, it’s very possible he’s turned a corner permanently. There’s immense upside here.
Projection: 4000 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns...
The Atlanta Falcons showed off a new sandwich they’ll be offering at this year’s training camp.
I couldn’t imagine eating that. It looks like a heart attack waiting to happen.

No more are the days of having to decide between pulled pork and macaroni and cheese at training camp.
The Atlanta Falcons unveiled a new sandwich they will have on hand for fans attending their training camp this year that is so unbelievable they can’t even come up with a name for it.
The 1.5 pound sandwich features pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, bacon, coleslaw and onion rings...
Last night the United States' legal system sent shockwaves across the country when George Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges arising from the death of Travon Martin. Naturally, there were plenty of angry tweets. Falcons receiver Roddy White was among those outraged that took to Twitter.

The Atlanta Falcons concessions are offering up a new sandwich for people attending training camp, and they want the fans to name it. The unnamed gastric monstrosity features pulled pork, applewood bacon, mac-n-cheese, coleslaw, two fried onion rings crammed into one bun, and it looks as delicious as it sounds…

Though Twitter is usually slow on a Saturday night in the middle of July, the George Zimmerman “not guilty” verdict drew the world to social media.
NFL players, in the final two weeks of their summer vacation before training camp starts, seemed to send out the most controversial tweets reacting to the verdict. Victor Cruz and Tyrann Mathieu sent out tweets that they would later...
In the midst of all the athletes behaving badly on Twitter (and various other platforms of this digital age), I’d prefer to focus on something much more fun and impressive. Behold, the latest sandwich creation from the fine folks behind the Atlanta Falcons organization.

Atlanta Falcons, FLAT: The Atlanta Falcons have one of the most complete rosters in football. There's no huge, glaring holes, and they'll likely cruise, rather comfortably, to a divisional title. The Falcons' big stumbling point has been the playoffs, but this could be their year. They won't have to play the scariest team in football, the Denver Broncos, on the NFC...
I don’t run from my feelings Juan…
Last night was emotional for a lot of people, but when you are a professional athlete with the following of Roddy White it might be better to not go overboard with your feelings.
After this tweet was RT’s thousands of time and Roddy was called out by just about everyone, he sent out another tweet.
