IRVING, Texas The Dallas Cowboys' defensive line is making a name for itself with its play. It's also made up a name for itself: The Fearsome Four. The name is borrowed from the famous Los Angeles Rams' "Fearsome Foursome" from the 1960s: Deacon Jones, Merlin Olsen, Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy. The Cowboys' Fearsome Four is made up of defensive ends DeMarcus Ware and George Selvie and tackles Jason Hatcher and Nick Hayden. The group is tied for fifth in the league with 13 sacks so far. "We're the Fearsome Four, because he's Hayden the only white guy," Hatcher joked. The original Fearsome Foursome also had one white (Olsen) and three African Americans. Each member of the Cowboys' Fearsome Four has a nickname bestowed upon them by defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. Hatcher is Big Daddy, Ware is Long Arms, Selvie is Brick Layer and Hayden is The Golden ****. The Golden ****? "I don't know where he comes up with the nicknames, but it's the "**** nose tackle," that's position I play, where I'm tilted at the nose," Hayden said. "I don't know where he got "golden" from or anything like that, but that's what he calls me." Marinelli posted note cards on each player's locker Wednesday at the team's Valley Ranch practice facility. Each note had a motivational message, a bird cartoon and had a mini souvenir football attached to it. "He's a great motivator," Hayden said. "It's great to see this stuff. It makes us work harder each week." Selvie was at a loss to explain his Brick Layer nickname. "I don't know, you've got to ask Coach Marinelli," Selvie said. "I ain't never laid no brick before, but I guess I'm doing it now, metaphorically." To hear Hatcher describe the group's chemistry, they could be named the Friendly Four. "We just go out there and have fun," Hatcher said. "I love Nick, I love George and D-Ware and the rest of those guys. We're friends off the field, so when on the field we've got a feel for each other. We know what each other thinks, what each other's going to do." Follow Keith Whitmire on Twitter: @Keith_Whitmire
