Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin’s name has surfaced as a possible replacement for the departed Rob Ryan, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.
Jerry Jones is looking to change defensive philosophies from a 3-4 to a 4-3, but the move may back fire and be more costly than good. Kiffin is known for the ‘Tampa 2’ defense, basically a 2 safety shell over the top of the defense, and a lot of zone concepts.
Kiffin used this defense with great success form 1996-2008, however, failed stints at the University of Tennessee and USC, soiled his reputation a little.
The Cowboys are built in a 3-4 fashion meant to pressure the quarterback; there will be a lot of turnover to convert to a cover 2 scheme. Ryan’s 3-4, used 46 principles to overload and blitz, however, Jones has said he wants a more conservative defense.
If Dallas is looking to win next year, it will be a stretch with going to a new defense such as the cover 2, Dallas just doesn’t have the players to execute it.
