NEW YORK - APRIL 22: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell looks on as he stands on stage during the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall on April 22, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images)
FN FolliesFormer NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was brought in by current Commissioner Roger Goodell to hear the appeals of the players involved in the New Orleans Saints "Bountygate" scandal - Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Scott Fujita, and Anthony Hargrove. Most thought it would be a slam-dunk victory for Goodell and the league. After all, would Tagliabue really not side with his former employer?Well, so much for the experts. On Tuesday, Tagliabue vacated all of Goodell’s player suspensions and fines. For those of you who don’t speak “legalese,” that means he reversed them. For those of you who do, here’s Tagliabue’s full ruling for your reading enjoyment. But not all was bad for “Ken Doll” Goodell. Tagliabue also affirmed Goodell’s original ruling that a bounty program did exist, and pointed the finger at the Saints organization and coaches, stating:"Unlike Saints' broad organizational misconduct, player appeals involve sharply focused issues of alleged individual player misconduct in several different aspects ... My affirmation of Commissioner Goodell's findings could certainly justify the issuance of fines. However, this entire case has been contaminated by the coaches and others in the Saints' organization,"I, for one, hope that this whole mess is closer to being resolved. Football should be covered by journalists and former players, not lawyers and legal experts. And isn’t it ironic how suspended Saints head coach Sean Payton will come out smelling like a rose? His team having a tough season in his absence, showing how valuable he is to the team. As a result, he will either get a new contract from the team, or possibly join another team (such as his former employer, the Dallas Cowboys?).Other quick-hit observations from Week 14:In light of the tragic death of Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown in a car crash – allegedly caused by teammate Josh Brent, who was charged with intoxication manslaughter, we ask the following: Why didn’t Bob Costas do a commentary this week on the evils of drinking and driving?Speaking of the Cowboys, not a very wise move by nose tackle Jay Ratliff, who had a confrontation last week with owner/general manager/this decade’s version of Al Davis, Jerry Jones. Nothing like biting the hand that feeds you.Now was playing for the New York Giants all that bad, Brandon Jacobs? How about you and Rex Ryan make up, and you come play for the New York Jets next year? There’s a match made in heaven.Speaking of everyone’s favorite train wreck, the Jets claimed wide receiver Braylon Edwards off waivers, one week after he tweeted that the “idiots calling the shots” were tp blame for the team’s woes, not quarterback Mark Sanchez. Ah, nothing like throwing gasoline on a smoldering fire. On the bright side, at least Sanchez now has one more ally in the locker room...I think it’s safe to say that New York Giants running back David Wilson is finally out of head coach Tom Coughlin’s doghouse, wouldn’t you?
