With the 2012 NFL Draft just underway, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to take the No. 5 pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With this selection, the Jags get Oklahoma State wide receiver, Justin Blackmon, to hopefully improve Jacksonville’s anemic passing attack.

Last season the Jags ranked dead last in the NFL in offense, so the need for Blackmon was pretty oblivious. After picking QB Blaine Gabbert last season, the Jags now hope to have their QB/WR combo of the future.

Justin Blackmon has been described as an Anquan Boldin type wide receiver who can use his strength and leaping ability to make spectacular plays. However, Blackmon is not a speed-demon, so there will still be a question as to how he will adapt to the press-coverage from NFL DBs. Still, Blackmon should immediately come in and take over the No. 1 receiver spot on a team whose leading wide receiver last season, Mike Thomas, only had 415 yards and 1 touchdown

In contrast, Blackmon is coming off a Junior season which saw he garner more yards than the Jag’s top three receivers combined. And Blackmon’s 18 TDs were more than the entire Jacksonville receiving corps in 2011.

2011 Season       REC         YDS       AVG        TD
                                121         1522       12.6        18

Some may question Jacksonville giving up picks to move from No.7 to No.5, but the smart money said that Blackmon would not get passed the St. Louis Rams selection at No.6. Seeing as the Rams traded out of No.6 after Blackmon came off the board, it appears the Jags may have just stolen him from St. Louis.
