He might not be the NFL’s best quarterback, but there’s no denying Tony Romo is a talented multi-sport athlete. That’s especially so on the hardwood, where he’s quickly drawing major props. Mazel Tov!

This offseason, Romo joined a basketball league at the Jewish Community Center, which, to say the least, is a far cry from the gridiron. But just because he’s not dodging blitzing linebackers and 300-pound defenders doesn’t mean he’s lost his competitive nature.

Quite the contrary, in fact.

“He’s extremely physical,” David Naxon, a recent opponent of Romo’s, told TabletMag.com. “He’ll push you around. He’s not going to hold back just because you’re a young Jewish man.”

Romo’s presence has provided a major influence for the JCC, and his skill-set has apparently transformed him into an amateur version of Michael Jordan (who you may have heard of).

“He has given the J’s league a spark,” fellow player Itzy Ribald said. “He’s turned a typical, semi-competitive league into an extremely competitive, fun, championship-type tournament. You feel like you’re going to play against Jordan, a superstar.”

Holy hyperbole, Batman.

Despite all else, the ever-present worry of Romo tackling a different sport, as Terrell Suggs made evident, is the possibility of injury. Already facing what amounts to a make-or-break campaign in Big D, his goal should be to make it to training camp in one piece. There doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming concern, however.

“At first, I thought I don’t want to injure him because I’m a big Cowboys fan, and I would be devastated if he got injured,” Naxon said. “But when I saw that he wasn’t holding back, I decided not to, either.”

As for why Romo would want to take his talents to this particular league, there’s at least one popular theory floating about.

I think he’s jealous that he never had a bar mitzvah so he is taking it out by kicking the Jews’ butts on the court,” Ribald said.

Ov vey.
