Why can a kid play NCAA hockey after he is drafted in the NHL, but a kid can’t play NCAA baseball after he is drafted in MLB? Chris Kreider, New York Rangers 1st round draft pick in 2009, didn't sign a contract with the Rangers until April 10, 2012. Per NHL rules, the Rangers still held his rights and Kreider was able to complete three years of school before he chose to sign. Kreider will likely appear in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the Rangers this week. The difference between the NHL and MLB is their respective collective bargaining agreements. The MLB’s CBA requires a team to sign their drafted player before his first day of class in college in order to retain exclusive right of negotiation for his services. In other words, you must sign a contract with the team that drafts you, or the team loses the draft rights.
