The last stretch of the NHL regular season is starting in just over twenty-four hours and the injured news seems to keep getting tougher. The New York Rangers have reported that Marc Staal is out with a lower body injury. Staal has been sidelined for the last three practices due to back spasms. He is questionable for the first game back on Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. The team has not revealed how serious his back spasms are but until they are not happening, he will not return to the ice in case of further injury. Michael Miller-Wikimedia CommonsWith Staal out, the head coach Alain Vigneault said in a post-practice interview that he and the team have no major concern for Staal and that all he needs is time and rest. Staal has missed a few games earlier this season after suffering from a concussion back on December seventh. So far this season Staal has played forty-nine games and has three goals and eleven assists.

The lines Alain Vigneault found success with are about to be changed, probably for good

The return of Derek Dorsett plus the call up of J.T. Miller minus Mats Zuccarello and maybe Ryan Callahan equals…? I still can’t get used to Alain Vigneault’s steady line combinations after four years of John Tortorella’s incessant juggling, but Vigneault has stuck with the same combinations for quite some time now.  It’s worth nothing that the Rangers finally turned...

Five stretch-run storylines for the New York Rangers

Five stretch-run storylines for the New York RangersWith the NHL back from the Olympic break, it’s time to turn our focus toward the stretch-run of the season. Just about every team across the league has plunged into the fourth and final lap of the mile, but objectives vary. For some teams, this is the race that matters. They’ll push the pace to the finish line in a fight for...

Report: Rangers’ Ryan Callahan ’99 Percent Guaranteed’ To Be Traded

The New York Rangers and captain Ryan Callahan haven’t been able to work out a contract extension, and for the team to avoid losing him for nothing as a free agent this summer, it appears general manager Glen Sather will move the veteran forward before the March 5 NHL trade deadline. “I’m told it’s 99 percent guaranteed Ryan Callahan will get traded by the deadline by the...

Callahan wants to stay with Rangers, but won’t be distracted

The Olympic break hasn’t changed Ryan Callahan’s thinking. The unrestricted free agent-to-be wants to be a Ranger for a long time. “It’s the same as when I left: This is where I want to be,” the Rangers captain said Tuesday at the MSG Training Center in Greenburgh, where he rejoined his teammates after playing with Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. “I’m going...

Dan Girardi More Important To The Rangers Than Ryan Callahan

from Andrew Gross of The Record, Callahan turns 29 on March 21. Girardi turns the big 3-0 on April 29. And the minimum term either would likely re-sign for with the Rangers is six seasons, even if the organization, so far, is reluctant to offer more than five. Girardi, even if he’s had to adapt his RoboCop-like shot-blocking game that worked so well under John Tortorella’s...

Rangers' Derek Dorsett should be back to pestering folks Thursday

New York Rangers' Derek Dorsett has been cleared for contact by team physicians, and being back to annoying the opposition isn't far behind.Dorsett's fibula snapped like a twig when he took a puck to the outside of his left skate while attempting to block a shot off the stick off Pittsburgh Penguins' Olli Maatta on January 3rd and was expected to miss four-to...

Future is bleak between New York Rangers, Ryan Callahan

Will Ryan Callahan be a part of the Rangers’ future plans? (Associated Press) Over his seven-year career with the organization, New York Rangers right wing and captain Ryan Callahan has become the heart and soul of the franchise. But with unrestricted free agency looming, Callahan wants to cash in big, and that money likely will not come from the Rangers. Larry Brooks of the New...

Michael St. Croix recalled to Wolf Pack

The Hartford Wolf Pack have recalled forward Michael St. Croix from the ECHL’s Greenville Road Warriors. This is St. Croix’s third stint with the AHL, where he is scoreless in nine games (2 PIMs, -3 rating). In 37 games in Greenville, St. Croix has a line of 13-27-40, with 12 PIMs and a +1 rating. St. Croix might be replacing the injured Danny Kristo in the lineup. The Pack also...

Rangers get no traction on Callahan-St. Louis swap

Reigning Art Ross Trophy winner and Canadian gold medal winner Martin St. Louis’ name has been in and out of play with the Rangers since Jan. 7, when he was bypassed by Team Canada (and Tampa Bay) general manager Steve Yzerman for his country’s Olympic roster, but no trade is pending that would bring the 38-year-old winger to New York, sources have told The Post. Blueshirts’...

Potential trade target: Steve Ott

Abelimages/Getty Images North America Over the past few weeks, we spoke how the Rangers might target Mike Cammalleri or Matt Moulson at the trade deadline to fill a need for top-six scoring consistency. It is the only real need for this team since the trade for Kevin Klein, as that trade addressed two needs: toughness on defense, and a right handed shot for the third pairing. With...

Tortorella apologizes to fans for comments about cheering for Sweden over Canada

John Tortorella apologized to fans Tuesday. You wonder how many Vancouver Canucks higher-ups wanted to thank him for that afterwards. There are a couple of points to ponder in Tortorella’s careful clarification of his comments regarding rooting for Sweden to beat Canada in the gold-medal game in Sochi. Tortorella didn’t like his public persona before coming to Vancouver. On...

J.T. Miller recalled

The Rangers have recalled forward J.T. Miller from the AHL. This is Miller’s fourth stint with the team this season, and he has put together a line of 2-2-4 in 25 games at the NHL level. In the AHL, Miller is one of Hartford’s best players, putting together a line of 10-16-26 in 26 games, including 3-14-17 in his most recent stint. The call up likely means that Derek Dorsett...
