When your number is called, you have to be ready. That not only applies to major leaguers, but for members of MLB tarp crews, as well. One Cincinnati grounds crewman got swallowed by the tarp during Monday night’s game between the Giants and Reds.
In the top of the eighth inning, the grounds crew rushed onto the field as inclement weather hovered over Great American Ballpark. One member of the team appeared to slip and fall while running the tarp across the infield. As a result, he was essentially eaten alive by the tarp.
While it’s never really funny to be trapped under a giant tarp, it did create a pretty entertaining moment. Below is the clip of Monday’s unfortunate incident:
The broadcast team calling the action couldn’t get enough. They seemed to enjoy this incident a little too much during the broadcast.
While it was probably a slightly scary situation for the grounds crew member, it doesn’t appear that he had any serious injuries as a result. So, that’s a major positive.
Monday night’s game between the Reds and Giants was suspended due to weather during a 2-2 tie. It will resume at 5:40 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
Broadcaster during Pirates-Giants game hit by foul ball
Apparently danger follows the Giants around. Over the weekend, a broadcaster for a Pirates-Dodgers game at PNC Park was struck by a foul ball while conducting an interview.
During MLB Sunday Leadoff, Ahmed Fareed was interviewing Pirates general manager Ben Cherington in the fifth inning of Sunday’s game when a foul ball flew into the broadcast booth. You can hear the concern in Fareed’s voice when he realized the ball was heading his direction.
Fortunately, Fareed didn’t suffer any injuries.
“I died but everyone else is fine. #BulletDodged.” Fareed wrote on Twitter. We’ll go ahead and say that if he felt well enough to tweet, the injuries were probably minor.
Let this be a warning to the Washington Nationals. There have been unusual dangers on each of San Francisco’s last two road stops (Pittsburgh and Cincinnati). Later this week, the Giants travel to the nation’s capital for a three-game series before concluding the road trip in Detroit.
San Francisco returns to the Bay Area on July 25 for a two-game series against the Oakland Athletics. Maybe then some of the dangers following this team around will take a rest.
