In the first of four with a last-place team in the Colorado Rockies, the New York Mets took care of business. In a fairly-tight game, the Mets came out on top with a 3-1 win at Citi Field.
The win now puts the Mets at 80-46 on the year with a two-game division lead. Coming off a 4-6 road trip, this was one the Mets needed to have. This series with the Rockies starts a much easier upcoming schedule for the Mets that they must take care of. They got off on the right foot last night.

Jacob deGrom goes six, allowing one run:
The Mets could not ask for a more ideal way to get back in the win column than with Jacob deGrom on the hill. In this one, he went six innings and threw 87 pitches. He allowed just three hits, one walk, and his lone run was a homer given up.
deGrom recorded nine strikeouts. He got the win and is now 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA in his five starts.
Following deGrom’s strong start, the Mets got an inning from Seth Lugo, Edwin Diaz, and Adam Ottavino.
All three of Lugo’s outs in the seventh were punchouts. However, he allowed three base runners with two hits and a walk. Lugo worked himself out of one tight jam, not allowing a run.
Diaz came in for the eighth to face the meat of the Rockies order. He, too, was shockingly in a bit of a jam. Diaz allowed a hit and a walk. He threw 16 pitches and recorded one strikeout.
In the ninth, Ottavino came in and did a great job. He threw 12 pitches, retiring all three batters he faced. Ottavino got one strikeout on his way to his first save of the season. His ERA is currently 2.13.
Pete Alonso sparks New York Mets with needed long ball:
Following a day off after what was a rough stretch for the Mets All-Star, Pete Alonso provided a key jolt to the Mets lineup that ultimately made the difference.
The Mets scored all three of their runs in the third inning of this one. It started with a base hit from Tomas Nido. It followed with Brandon Nimmo reaching base, who did three times in this one.
The first of three runs was driven in by Francisco Lindor on a groundout. Then, Alonso came up and 3-0 swinging, crushed one to deep left field. The run batted in for Lindor was his 85th on the year, tied for sixth in the MLB. Lindor also reached base with two walks. Alonso now has 31 homers (fourth) and 104 RBIs (tied for third).
The two bats the Mets need more from after recent struggles delivered. Nimmo worked counts, hit the ball hard, and ultimately reached three times in four plate appearances. Alonso, who the Mets need the home run ball from, delivered in a big way for the batting order in this one.
Lastly, it was great to see Brett Baty shake back after some tough at-bats. With two strikeouts in his first three at-bats, Baty roped a single in his final at-bat. The exit velocity was a blazing 108.5 mph, his best on a base hit yet. Hopefully, it gives Baty something to build on as he keeps gaining more major league experience.
