New York Mets Officially Release Darin Ruf
USA TODAY Sports

It's official.

The Mets released Darin Ruf on Sunday after designating him for assignment on March 27.

The 36-year-old struggled immensely after the Mets acquired him from the San Francisco Giants at last season's trade deadline. In 29 games as a Met, Ruf slashed .152/.216/.197 with no home runs and three doubles.

Ruf's struggles carried over into the spring as he hit just .167 in 11 Grapefruit League games, which led to the Mets decision to designate him for assignment.

Since the Mets were unable to find a trade partner, they owe Ruf $3 million in 2023 and will buy him out for $250,000 in 2024.

Outfielder Tim Locastro ultimately made the team over Ruf due to his impressive speed.

GM Billy Eppler spoke about the failed trade for Ruf.

"Just generally, it was hard for him to get his feet underneath him," Eppler said. "... His first game here with us I think he had a double, and then it just kind of started snowballing.

"Feel bad for him as a person and the things that he kind of endured, but I appreciate how he handled everything and how professional he was through all of it. Just like last year on some things, we’re going to make the best baseball decision we have to make."
