The Cubs officially signed 18-year-old Cuban right-hander Lázaro Ronald Mena. The reported signing bonus was $350,000. One of the Cubs top pitching prospects, right-hander Brandon Birdsell, is undergoing season-ending elbow surgery.
The Rule 5 draft, held annually at the winter meetings in December, never garners much fanfare, but it has been known to yield some noteworthy transactions.
Cubs pitching prospect Brandon Birdsell was named the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2024 and looked like he was in line for a 40-man roster spot next spring.

That’s par for the course, as the recent study on pitcher injuries showed the highest risk came during spring training, but it’s never good to have multiple guys on the shelf before things even get started.
