After 10 years serving as a relief pitcher for seven different teams, Luis Avilan is hanging up his cleats. Avilan signed with the Atlanta Braves as an international free agent in 2005.
Former left-handed reliever Luis Avilan, who spent a decade in the big leagues, has announced his retirement at the age of 34. The report came from Jon Heyman of the New York Post on social media: Luis Avilan, who pitched 10 years in the big leagues and is 23-11 lifetime with a 3.43 ERA, has retired.
Avilan, 32, underwent Tommy John surgery last April and was thus limited to five innings with the Nats.
Schwarber suffered the injury during the second inning of Friday night's game while rounding first base following a single.
Washington began Tuesday night at 5-9 overall and in last place in the National League East standings.
Avilan would likely miss the remainder of the season if he opts for surgery, but he appears to be in line for a lengthy absence even if he decides against a procedure.
In a surprising move, the Yankees announced Tuesday that they’ve optioned lefty Jordan Montgomery to the team’s alternate site in Scranton.
