Denny Hamlin Clinches Gateway pole as NASCAR Playoff Lineup Shapes

The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are just one race in, and the drama has already shifted gears. After Chase Briscoe claimed his second straight Southern 500 win at Darlington to secure a spot in the Round of 12, attention now turns to new territory for postseason racing: World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis.

For the first time, Gateway hosts a playoff race as the Enjoy Illinois 300 takes center stage. The 1.25-mile oval, already known for producing unpredictable battles since joining the schedule in 2022, promises to play an even bigger role now that championship hopes are on the line.

On Saturday, Denny Hamlin set the tone early by grabbing pole with a lap of 32.330 seconds (139.190 mph). It marks his second straight pole to open the playoffs and his third of the season.

Hamlin’s blistering pace puts him ahead of Kyle Larson on the front row, with Briscoe, Ross Chastain, and Ryan Blaney rounding out the top five.

The full lineup also features heavy hitters like William Byron(6th), Tyler Reddick (7th), and Joey Logano(13th) — while playoff regulars such as Kyle Busch (22nd) and Chase Elliott (19th) will have to work their way forward. Rookie Shane van Gisbergen, making just his second playoff start, rolls off from 18th.

Adding intrigue is NASCAR’s decision to debut a new tire package at Gateway, the same combination tested at Iowa earlier this year. With unknowns about tire wear and handling, strategy could prove decisive. Larson, notably, was the only playoff driver to participate in that June tire test, giving him a possible edge.

Three previous Cup races at Gateway have produced three different winners — Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, and Austin Cindric — suggesting Sunday could deliver yet another shakeup.

Here's the full starting lineup:

  1. #11 Denny Hamlin
