Vikings Acquire Joshua Dobbs In Trade With Cardinals
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings have acquired quarterback Joshua Dobbs in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL media.

Adam Schefter of ESPN adds that the Vikings are sending a sixth-round draft pick to the Cardinals, who are also shipping a seventh-rounder back to Minnesota in the deal.

This news comes a day after Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon announced that the team would be benching Dobbs in favor of rookie signal-caller Clayton Tune.

The Vikings instantly became in need of a quarterback after Kirk Cousins went down with a torn Achilles during the team’s Week 8 win over the Green Bay Packers. Cousins’ injury left the Vikes with Jaren Hall as the only healthy signal-caller on its active roster.

Dobbs has made eight starts in place of the injured Kyler Murray for the Cardinals this season, throwing for 1,569 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 62.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 81.2. Arizona went just 1-7 in his starts.

The 28-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Tennessee, was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Dobbs spent four seasons with the Steelers but never made a start. He appeared in six games overall, throwing a grand total of 17 passes.

He then made his way to the Tennessee Titans, where he started two games in 2022 and threw for 411 yards, two touchdowns and a couple of picks while going 40-for-68.

Dobbs seems unlikely to step in as the starting quarterback for the Vikings in Week 9 when they take on the Atlanta Falcons. Of course, instantly taking snaps for a new team will be no small feat for Joshua Dobbs, as he will have to learn an entirely new playbook in a very short duration of time.

Minnesota is 4-4 on the year and has won four of its last five games.
