Golden Knights’ Brossoit clears waivers, assigned to AHL

Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Laurent Brossoit went unclaimed since being placed on waivers Thursday, and as a result, will be assigned to the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League.

The 29-year-old Brossoit, who signed a two-year, $4.65 million deal during the 2021 offseason, served as the Golden Knights backup goaltender for the course of the 2021-22 season. Due to hip surgery this past spring, he was not ready to go for the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign, and was just recently assigned to the Silver Knights on a conditioning loan.

Due to his struggles in his two starts with the Silver Knights this past week, paired with both Logan Thompson and Adin Hill’s exceptional play with the Golden Knights thus far, there was simply no room for Brossoit on the NHL roster. He will now report to Henderson, and could be traded in the near future.

Why Brossoit could get traded after going unclaimed on waivers is simple: cap-strapped teams simply could not fit in his full $2.325 million cap hit. Now, with him going unclaimed on waivers, his cap hit decreases by nearly 50% to just $1.2 million, a number much easier for interested teams to acquire. That said, they may want to give him a few more games first with the Silver Knights to ensure he is able to return to form after his hip procedure, but if he is indeed able to do so, he could be moved in the very near future.
