Deja vu with the Mercury’s season struggles
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Phoenix Mercury have only two more games at home in Footprint Center before their season comes to an end without a playoff appearance. With four games left total, the Mercury have tied their most-losses in a season with 27.

Back in 2012, the Mercury held a record of 7-27 under head coach Corey Gaines. They finished in last place two games behind former WNBA team, the Tulsa Shock.

The Phoenix team looked much different in 2012 with a different coach, arena, roster and opponents. Only Diana Taurasi is the same rostered player on both teams.

Although their team looks different, their losing record is ringing bells. In their 2023 season, the Mercury are in the midst of their second worst defensive rating in program history with 108.6 points allowed per 100 possessions.

Currently on a seven game losing streak, the Mercury have been eliminated from playoff contention but are in no way easy sailing through the rest of the season.

In the next four games, the Mercury face the No. 1 ranked Las Vegas Aces twice – once at home and once on the road.

The Mercury will ride their season out continuing on Sunday as they face the Minnesota Lynx on the road.
