I am reminded every December of the young men and women who choose to serve our nation no matter the circumstances. Every year when Army and Navy get together for what I consider to truly be the best rivalry in college football, we are all reminded of the sacrifices those who defend our nation take on. Every year on September 11 I am reminded of the attacks and the lives lost in New York City, Washington D.C. and in western Pennsylvania, where I was that day and the events in my life that unfolded after that. While I was not directly impacted by the attacks on that Tuesday morning, I think I joined millions in sadness and anger. I make it a point to post something every September 11 to keep the day in perspective and look back on the day as a whole. This year I simply want to extend my gratitude to those who have served our country, be it in the armed forces or closer to home as a member of law enforcement or an emergency response team. Thank you for all that you do because without you people like me would not be able to do what we do. We would not be able to spend lazy Saturday afternoons watching 12 hours of football while stuffing our faces with chips and salsa and the beverage of our choice. I say that partly in jest, but underlined in serious respect. This year’s Army Navy Game will feature players on both teams who were just eight, nine or ten years old at the time the country was attacked. At that age they may have been able to digest what was happening, they were still much too young to understand the magnitude of what had occurred. And here we are, 12 years later, and these kids have grown up to fully appreciate the sacrifices of those who came before them in hopes of being able to preserve the future opportunities for the children who are here today. On the football field this weekend, Army will play host to No. 5 Stanford. Navy will host FCS Delaware. On Friday night Air Force will take on Boise State in Boise. Since I started covering college football I sort of got away from my rooting interests, but this is a week I always let out a little cheer for the military academies just a little more often than usual. Hopefully you will join me as well. Go Army! Go Navy! Go Air Force!
