Found June 17, 2013 on Reading Between The Seams:
The New York Yankees have signed their first round draft pick, prep LHP Ian Clarkin for $1.65M, the slot budget for the pick.  One of the more interesting stories of the first round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft was Clarkin, who immediately after being drafted, had  a “whoops” on his introductory tape on MLB.com (skip to the 1:35 mark for expedited service): “I could not stand the Yankees; I was actually in tears, I was so happy…” in reference to Luis Gonzalez Game 7 winning single off of Mariano Rivera. Cannot stand the Yankees, can stand $1.65MCredit: San Diego Union Tribune Obviously the video was recorded long before he knew where he would fall.  I guess bygones can be bygones, I’ll gladly take just about anybody who I “cannot stand” if they fork over $1M or more! Clarkin has handled the situation well, further clarifying (according to the same MLB.com feature): “Now I do love them, and my [Pirates fan] dad’s going to have to learn to love them, too,” said Clarkin, who was 9-2 with a 0.95 ERA this season. “They’re the most historic organization, and I am looking forward to it. There’s proof in the pudding, and I’m excited for it.” I wish I had $1.65M pudding! Would be great if this kid ends up making the team, an All Star game or two, then maybe ends up in Monument Park!? - David Whitlock (@lhd_on_sports) Follow us on Twitter @rbts_baseball The post Prospect who “cannot stand the Yankees” inks deal with Yankees appeared first on Reading Between The Seams.
