East Boston high schooler Pat Santos is still young, but it’s likely he will never hit a bigger shot in his life than he did on Tuesday night.
Trailing by two to Madison Park with one second remaining, Santos gathered an intentionally missed free throw and did all that he could — turn and fire the ball at the hoop from some 80 feet away. Unbelievably, the shot went in, giving East Boston a 43-42 victory in the most improbable fashion.
Afterwards, opposing coach Dennis Wilson was a little incredulous about how things had played out.
“We were up two, I went with the miss … the clock should have ran out,” Wilson argued in The Boston Herald’s video report. “One second? One second?!?”
