Three members of the Greely High School's (Cumberland, Maine) girls basketball team have been disciplined after a photo of them giving a Nazi salute surfaced.School officials were forced to take action when in anonymous letter was sent to the school last week claiming that members of the girls basketball team were making anti-Semitic jokes via Twitter. The letter also lists three pages of tweets allegedly written by the girls that use offensive and insensitive language. One of the tweets, posted on Dec. 24, read: "So Jewish to have prac on Christmas Eve day."Another says: "If ---- picked me up, she would've made me do sprints, then put me in a gas chamber."The letter also claims that one of the team members routinely re-tweeted anti-Semitic and anti-female tweets by @DictatorHitler."When situations like this come up when students are using prejudiced and intolerant speech and actions, it shows that the school really needs to seriously institute anti-bias, anti-bullying education and curriculum," Chaleff said.Principal Dan McKeone doesn't believe the girls intended any "hate or bias" by the posts after speaking with them one-on-one.He declined to say how the girls were being disciplined because they are minors. The school sent home a letter to parents that read in part: "...These events, while disturbing, also provide us with an opportunity to teach our children about tolerance and respect... We will be working with the team in order to help them gain a better understanding of the ramifications of incidents such as this. We will also been looking for additional opportunities to educate the greater school community..."Greely is planning a school-wide assembly in which a member of the Attorney General's office will speak to the students about prejudice and hate speech.Via USA TODAY
