When the Celtics won the championship five years ago, Kevin Garnett gave an emotional post-game interview claiming that, “Anything is possible!” Let’s revisit that brief moment in time... Ever since that year, it’s been a heck of a roller coaster ride for the team and fans. We miss Garnett for one playoff season, the Perkins trade happened, Ray Allen leaves us for the enemy, and we’ve seen what seems like dozens of players in and out of the lineups. Then this season we witness various highs and lows including winning six games in a row, losing six games in a row, and then the injuries to Sullinger, Barbosa, and Rondo. It’s enough to make a fan want to check into a mental institution or start taking meds for heart conditions. Someday I'm gonna have a heart attack and the doctor's gonna be like what happened? My family will be like.... The Celtics. Lol— KG (@KGendron5) April 6, 2013 We have to remember that this is a completely different team from the beginning of the season. The new players who just came on board a couple months ago are still learning an entirely new system of play. Then you have the original players like Bass, Pierce, and KG trying to rebuild chemistry with players who are coming back into the lineup from injury. Tack onto that minor injuries here and there that have sidelined Pierce, Garnett, and Lee during this latter part of the season. Mix that all together and that’s where all the inconsistent play has come from. You have to take into account everything the team has gone through this season. It’s probably taken a toll on their psyche and confidence. It is disheartening to watch the Celtics lose to non-playoff teams, but let’s keep in mind that when playoffs roll around, there is always a renewed focus and the mentality is completely different. We know that players are not giving all their effort right now, and that may be by design. Think about it. Can they really afford to have another major injury?  Doc has stressed that the team being healthy is a priority right now, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he told the team behind closed doors to not play too hard. Granted, the Celtics don’t have too much time to get it together and they still need to win a few more games to lock in that 7th spot. So as the regular season winds down and the team still continues to struggle, clinging to that 7th seed (Milwaukee is 2 games behind), we still can’t relax with the possibility of facing Miami in the first round. But if they do end up as the 8th seed, would it really be all that bad? Why not go ahead and get Miami out of the way while KG and Pierce are fresh from a little rest? Despite all of the drama, those three words that Garnett passionately shared with us continues to linger in the air at TD Garden and in the minds of Celtics fans around the world.
