In baseball, 13 years of playing at the major league level is quite an accomplishment. This becomes even more accurate regarding pitchers. Brett Anderson is a 13-year veteran. He last pitched in 2021 with the Brewers after two seasons in Milwaukee. He now wants to play again in 2023, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Anderson became a free agent upon the conclusion of the 2021 season. That year, he pitched 96 innings for the Brewers and had a 4.22 ERA. During his first year with the Brew Crew, he had a 4.21 ERA. He did not sign with a team for the 2022 season, but he also did not retire.
Anderson has a career 4.07 ERA over 1,140.1 innings pitched. He began his career with the Oakland Athletics in 2009. He's also played for the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Anderson tends to rely on a sinker that generates a lot of ground balls. He has a career 59% ground-ball rate. Opposing batters do tend to make loud contact off him, and with the shift going away in 2023, that may not be conducive to Anderson’s game.
It’s unclear if any teams will have interest in the soon-to-be 35-year-old southpaw. Having not pitched in 2022, a showcase is likely in his future this offseason. Even then, he may only get a minor league contract with a team.
