Senators' Mark Borowiecki thwarts attempted robbery

Ottawa Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki played the role of crimefighter on Sunday when he thwarted an attempted robbery in Vancouver.

With the Senators in town ahead of Tuesday’s showdown with the Canucks, Borowiecki was out for a walk in Vancouver when he happened upon an individual attempting to break into a car. Borowiecki confronted the would-be robber, and a brief confrontation broke out during which he wrestled away the purloined items.

While the suspect ultimately got away, the items were returned to their owner. No arrests have been made.

Borowiecki provided his side of the story Tuesday ahead of Ottawa’s 5-2 road loss to Vancouver, and the Senators defenseman was modest about his role in the incident.

“I’m a mediocre fighter on the ice, but I’m very confident handling myself off the ice,” Borowiecki said, via ESPN. “I wasn’t too worried about anything that would happen.

“Honestly, I don’t think I went above or beyond or anything. It was the right thing to do at the time. I’m happy I was there.”

Borowiecki added he received a “nice text” from the owner of the car, but joked that her NHL allegiances unsurprisingly are not with the Senators, nor the hometown Canucks, for that matter.

“She was like, ‘I’m actually a huge Leafs fan,'” Borowiecki said.
