MLB MVP candidates

As we get closer to Opening Day, the MLB award candidates are coming into focus. Here are 12 of the top candidates to win the MVP in both the American and National Leagues.

1 of 24

AL: Jose Altuve, 2B, Astros

Altuve won the AL MVP in 2017 but was plagued by a knee injury last season. Still, he has won the Silver Slugger in five consecutive seasons and has three batting titles on his resume. If healthy, he'll be in the running for another MVP.

2 of 24

NL: Nolan Arenado, 3B, Rockies

Arenado recently signed a seven-year extension with the Rockies, great news for Colorado fans. He finished third in the NL MVP voting last year, his best result to date, and has led the league in home runs in three of the past four seasons. Arenado has won a Gold Glove at third base in each of his six seasons in the majors.

AL: Mookie Betts, OF, Red Sox

Betts declined in 2017 after finishing second in the MVP voting in 2016, but he bounced back to win the award last year. He hit 32 HRs and stole 30 bases in 2018, his first 30-30 season. At 26, he's entering his prime. .

NL: Javier Baez, IF, Cubs

Baez is coming off a breakout campaign (.290, 34 HRs, 111 RBI), which earned him second in the NL MVP voting. The 26-year-old is entering his prime.

5 of 24

AL: Alex Bregman, 3B, Astros

Houston is getting quite a return on the second overall pick of the 2015 draft. Bregman made his first All-Star appearance last year and hit .286-31-103 with a .926 OPS for the season. His 51 doubles led the league.

6 of 24

NL: Kris Bryant, 3B, Cubs

Bryant would like to forget  2018 -- he missed much of the season because of a shoulder injury. The 27-year-old won the NL MVP in 2016 and is highly capable of getting back to that level if he's healthy.

7 of 24

AL: Carlos Correa, SS, Astros

Correa has been plagued by injuries during his four-year career. When healthy, he has been productive. In 2017, he hit .315 with 24 HRs and 84 RBI in only 109 games. He drove in a career-high 96 runs in 2016.

8 of 24

NL: Freddie Freeman, 1B, Braves

Freeman, who finished a career-best fourth in the NL MVP voting last season, is the top veteran on a young Braves team. He has only one 30-HR season, but the nine-year vet is one of the league's top hitters.

9 of 24

AL: Khris Davis, DH, Athletics

Davis is one of the league's premier power bats. In 2018, he led the AL with 48 home runs, giving him a streak of three straight seasons with at least 42 HRs. He peaked at eighth in the MVP voting last season. Primarily a DH, he could be a long shot for the award.

10 of 24

NL: Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, Cardinals

Goldschmidt enters a walk year after getting traded from Arizona to St. Louis. There's pressure on him to help the Cardinals return to the playoffs after a three-year hiatus. With three top-three MVP finishes, he is highly capable of earning the award.

11 of 24

AL: Aaron Judge, OF, Yankees

AL: Aaron Judge, OF, Yankees

Judge won AL Rookie of the Year and finished second in the MVP voting in 2017. He was sidelined part of last season with a fractured wrist and did not earn MVP consideration. He has quickly become one of the game's top hitters (.963 OPS over two-plus seasons). Judge has an excellent supporting cast.

12 of 24

NL: Bryce Harper, OF, Phillies

NL: Bryce Harper, OF, Phillies

Harper, who recently signed a $330 million contract with Philadelphia, is the NL favorite to win his second MVP Award. He should be helped by the small confines at Citizens Bank Park, but the pressure will be on after getting a huge payday.

13 of 24

AL: Francisco Lindor, SS, Indians

AL: Francisco Lindor, SS, Indians

Lindor, who has made three consecutive All-Star Game appearances, is plagued with a calf injury that could put his Opening Day availability in jeopardy. He will be even more important this year for a Cleveland team that lost Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes in the offseason.

14 of 24

NL: Rhys Hoskins, 1B, Phillies

NL: Rhys Hoskins, 1B, Phillies
Butch Dill / USA Today Sports Images

Hoskins has 52 home runs in only 203 MLB games, and he's set to move back to his natural position of first base after struggling in the outfield last year. Likely to protect Bryce Harper in the Phils lineup, Hoskins could produce huge RBI numbers.

15 of 24

AL: J.D. Martinez, DH, Red Sox

AL: J.D. Martinez, DH, Red Sox
Jasen Vinlove / USA Today Sports Images

Year 1 of Martinez's five-year, $110 million contract was terrific for Boston, as he competed for the Triple Crown after hitting .330-43-130; he finished fourth in the AL MVP vote. That will be tough to repeat, but he has hit more than 40 home runs in each of the past two seasons.

16 of 24

NL: Manny Machado, 3B, Padres

NL: Manny Machado, 3B, Padres

Machado recently signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres and is set to start at third base. He has hit at least 33 home runs in four consecutive seasons and has a wealth of young talent around him in San Diego.

17 of 24

AL: George Springer, OF, Astros

Although he made a second straight All-Star Game appearance, Springer is coming off a somewhat disappointing 2018. He won the Silver Slugger in 2017 after hitting .283-34-85 with an .889 OPS. He is likely to hit leadoff again for the Astros.

18 of 24

NL: Anthony Rendon, 3B, Nationals

NL: Anthony Rendon, 3B, Nationals
Isaiah J. Downing / USA Today Sports Images

With Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy gone, Rendon is the most proven hitter in the Nationals lineup. He has hit at least 20 home runs in four of the past five seasons; he's also hit above .300 in the past two seasons. His best finish in the MVP voting was fifth in 2014.

19 of 24

AL: Giancarlo Stanton, OF, Yankees

The 2017 NL MVP winner with a mammoth .281-59-132 season in Miami, Stanton was a relative disappointment after hitting "just" .266-38-100 for the Yankees last year. At age 29, Stanton is capable of another MVP; playing in hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium helps.

20 of 24

NL: Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Cubs

NL: Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Cubs
Patrick Gorski / USA Today Sports Images

Rizzo has been one of baseball's most consistent offensive performers, with an OPS from .846 to .928 in each of the past five seasons. He remains in his prime at age 29 and has finished fourth in the MVP voting twice.

21 of 24

AL: Mike Trout, OF, Angels

AL: Mike Trout, OF, Angels
Rick Scuteri / USA Today Sports Images

The consensus best player in baseball, Trout has won two MVP Awards and finished top four in the voting in each of the past seven seasons. He reportedly is finalizing a 12-year, $430 million deal, the largest contract in professional sports history. Trout led the AL in OPS during three of the last four years and is unsurprisingly the favorite to win the AL MVP this year.

22 of 24

NL: Eugenio Suarez, 3B, Reds

NL: Eugenio Suarez, 3B, Reds
Aaron Doster / USA Today Sports Images

Suarez has shown steady offensive growth during his career and is coming off a career year (.283-34-104). The Reds have added significant talent this offseason, and Suarez could be a dark-horse MVP candidate if the team plays as the front office expects.

23 of 24

AL: Jose Ramirez, 3B, Indians

Peter Aiken / USA Today Sports Images

The diminutive Ramirez has become an elite power hitter, launching 39 home runs last year and posting an OPS well above .900 for the second straight year. He was also a 30/30 man for the first time and finished third in the AL MVP voting for the second straight year.

24 of 24

NL: Christian Yelich, OF, Brewers

NL: Christian Yelich, OF, Brewers
Gary A. Vasquez / USA Today Sports Images

The reigning NL MVP, Yelich hit .326-36-110 last year in his first season with the Brewers. He led the league in batting average and slugging and also grades well defensively. Milwaukee's expectations are high this year after adding Yasmani Grandal and re-signing Mike Moustakas.

Cleveland Guardians Slapped With Bad News Before Trade Deadline

Cleveland Guardians Slapped With Bad News Before Trade Deadline

The Cleveland Guardians are quite a mystery heading into the MLB trade deadline, as no one seems to know whether they will buy, sell or possibly even do nothing before July 31. The Guardians are hovering around .500, but they are still smack dab in the middle of the American League Wild Card race. That's in spite of losing 10 straight just before the All-Star break. Even with Cleveland remaining in contention, there are some who believe the Guardians might sell given their conservative nature, but talk show host Bruce Drennan has provided some rather bad news for the team in that regard: the players they might want to move don't have much value. “No top prospects for a big bat, and I don’t necessarily see us selling players, like Carlos Santana or Lane Thomas. What can you get in return?” Drennan said. Drennan has a point. Santana and Thomas are both impending free agents, and neither has been all that good this season. Santana owns a .665 OPS, and Thomas has been on and off the injured list while hitting just .160 on the year. Of course, the Guardians would surely be able to land a hefty return for players like Steven Kwan and Emmanuel Clase, but it does not seem like Cleveland is going to move either of those two stars. Perhaps the Guardians will surprise some people and go all in by adding pieces at the deadline, but that isn't exactly in their nature. We'll see what happens before the end of the months, but it stands to reason that Cleveland might just stand pat, as Drennan anticipates. Read More Cleveland Guardians Coverage

Browns make curious decision with rookie QB Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns are giving Shedeur Sanders special treatment in training camp, but it's not the type of favoritism the fifth-round pick would necessarily want. Per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN, Sanders is the only Browns quarterback who has not been taking reps with the first-team offense during OTAs or the first two practices of training camp. Former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett, veteran Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel have all split reps with the first team. Despite being asked to throw passes to members of the equipment staff amid a shortage of professional pass-catchers for a four-quarterback roster, Sanders said he's thankful for the opportunity to show the Browns coaching staff his talents. "I feel like that it's not in my control, so I'm not going to think about that or even have that in my thought process of why it is," Sanders said to a question as to why he's not getting first-team reps. "There's a lot of people who want to have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here and I'm thankful to have the opportunity. So, whenever that is, that is." Sanders, 23, believes that he can contribute more to the Browns than what the coaching staff is asking of him. "It doesn't make me feel down or left out because I know who I am as a person," Sanders said. "I know who I am as an individual and I know what I could bring to this team. So, I can never feel less than any circumstance." The Browns selected Sanders with the No. 144 pick in April's draft. As a player whom many draft analysts thought was a first-round talent, Cleveland took what could be the steal of the draft in the fifth round. It's curious why the Browns aren't giving Sanders a shot with the first team early in training camp before the quarterback race becomes more serious. Cleveland should absolutely see what Sanders has to offer this summer. Flacco, 40, isn't a long-term solution at the position. Pickett failed in Pittsburgh. The Browns need to gauge what rookies Gabriel and Sanders can do with the first team. Having Sanders throw balls to the equipment staff is a waste of everyone's time. But then again, Cleveland has wasted plenty of quarterbacks.

Lakers Pegged as Landing Spot for Ex-Celtics Guard Named Top Free Agency 'Steal'

The Los Angeles Lakers are working on building a contender around last season's blockbuster addition of Luka Doncic, and could have their eyes on a player named the biggest "steal" of free agency. James Herbert of CBS Sports noted that former Boston Celtics star Malcolm Brogdon is still looking for his next NBA home and could be a bargain for a team that lands him. "After a couple of years in Portland and Washington, it feels like it's time for the veteran guard to get back on a winning team," Herbert wrote. "If healthy, he could be a real bargain for a contender -- it was only two years ago that he won Sixth Man of the Year in Boston." Bleacher Report's Timothy Rapp named the Lakers as a team to watch for Brogdon, who has shared his admiration for Lakers star LeBron James in the past. Speaking to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, the former NBA Rookie of the Year said he believes James is the greatest of all time and disagrees with those who use his longevity as an argument against him. “At 40, I think that LeBron is playing at a higher level, but I think medicine and I think science has come a long way,” Brogdon said. “But I think also longevity has to be counted for LeBron. He’s the first player in this game to have longevity that is counted against him, you know? It’s one of his downfalls.” Brodgon was a solid contributor for the Washington Wizards last season, scoring 12.7 points with 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

A.J. Hinch Sends Clear Message in Midst of Tumultuous Tigers Stretch

What is going on with the Detroit Tigers right now? That's what the entire baseball world is wondering as the team that had been dominant throughout the first part of the season has crumbled in front of everyone's eyes. After being the first to win 60 games, they are stuck on that number, while three teams have surpassed them and four others have joined them at that mark. More News: Former Tigers All-Star Pitcher Gets Traded in Early Deadline Deal Entering Saturday's contest against the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays, the Tigers have lost 11 out of their last 12 games, showcasing an inability to score runs and prevent them that had not been on display during the first half. It's easy to understand why there might be panic about Detroit. Despite their incredible run during the back stretch of last season that took them one win away from reaching the ALCS, not many people expected this team to do much in 2025, pointing to their middling roster that was full of young and unproven talent. Before the All-Star break, not much went wrong even with all the injuries they suffered. But it's been a different story since then. More News: Tigers Could Have Fewer Options To Address Bullpen Needs Than Rivals Thankfully, the Tigers have a veteran manager in their dugout, and he is the right man to steer them out of this funk. "I've never been on a team that hasn't gone through a little bit of something at some point. There is no easy 162-game schedule," he said to reporters, including Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press. How does he aim to get his team back on track? By being steady and not reacting one way or another to what has happened. "A steady approach works. It's not always easy. It's not always the most popular because you want this massive reaction one way or the other. We've got to play the game that's in front of us today," Hinch added. "... The steadiness is what these guys are looking for." Detroit's Major League roster has had to grow up quickly. Still in the midst of a prolonged rebuild, all of a sudden they were thrust into the spotlight with their late-season run in 2024 that carried over into the first part of this year. It's uncharted territory for many in organization, and that includes the decision makers at the top. More News: Tigers Land Two Major Upgrades From Diamondbacks in This Trade Idea Hinch doesn't fall into that category, though. He's been there before, previously leading an unproven group on an unproven franchise to sustained success. "I've managed 100-plus win teams that have gone through six- and seven- and eight-game losing streaks, or lost 12 of 13. You don't think of that because we forget over time. There's going to be a time that we all forget about this. It's just not right now when you're going through it. You feel like you're getting suffocated day by day where the first thing that goes wrong brings back the thoughts of previous games. Welcome to sports. It's an emotional ride. Those that stay steady will survive," Hinch stated. The Tigers are looking to do exactly that, and if they can come out of this on the other side, then they should be much better for it.
