Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome has been at the center of trade rumors for months now, and the Dallas Cowboys could be the team to acquire the former first-round pick. Now playing in the final year of his contract, reporters across the league believe the rebuilding Browns would prefer a draft pick over one year of his services, especially when they can save close to $13 million in cap space with a trade.
While no trade materialized over the offseason, the DaRon Bland injury could force the Cowboys to acquire Greg Newsome. At least, that’s what Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes, as the NFL analyst recently made his case for why Dallas should go after the starting cornerback.
“Trading for Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II could give the Cowboys exactly the sort of cornerback depth they need,” Knox writes. “The 25-year-old is coming off of a fantastic game against the Cincinnati Bengals (68.7 opposing passer rating) and has shown the ability to play on the perimeter or in the slot.”
It’s easy to see why the Dallas Cowboys would be interested in a Greg Newsome trade. Despite sending Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, this team still wants to compete, as evidenced by the DaRon Bland and Tyler Smith extensions. Jerry Jones believes that two or three good players are more valuable than one great player, and Newsome could help improve this secondary.
In the short term, Newsome could start opposite Trevon Diggs and keep the defense afloat while Bland works his way back to health. Down the road, Diggs, Bland, and Newsome could give Dallas one of the league’s deeper cornerback rooms, which is necessary when the defense lacks a proven pass rush. Additionally, Newsome’s presence will provide some much-needed depth in case injuries strike Diggs again.
Knox believes the Cowboys would be willing to send a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick in a Greg Newsome trade, but would the Browns accept this offer? Frankly, it’s hard to see them saying no to such a deal. While Newsome is a good player, getting two draft picks for one year of Newsome in a season where the playoffs are all but impossible is a fantastic value.
Cleveland needs all the draft picks it can get, as the team is searching for their next franchise quarterback. While it’s too early to officially give up on rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, third- and fifth-round picks generally don’t turn out to be franchise saviors. The Browns could use the picks acquired in the Greg Newsome trade to potentially move up in the 2026 NFL Draft and land their quarterback of the future.
