Russell Wilson is Very Overrated

Not… Despite being one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks of the last decade, his days of outsmarting defenses and being the perfect offensive weapon are over. After being casted as the lead role in the dumbest play call in Super Bowl history, his playoff record since then has been mediocre at best.

If you think that 3-5 is a decent record in the postseason, you either live in Seattle or have Russell Wilson on your fantasy team. For those of you who argue that football is a team sport, let me enlighten you on a little secret. The Legion of Boom ended in 2014. If you don’t have a respectable defense, you can forget about winning your division with Wilson as your quarterback. The only wins that he’s been able to secure in the playoffs have been against the Lions, the Eagles, and the Vikings. Actually, the only reason Seattle even ended up winning one of those games was because of Blair Walsh.

Russell Wilson is All out of Excuses…

“Well, maybe it’s because Russell Wilson didn’t have any weapons.” Nope. In those eight playoff games, he’s had company in players like Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, DK Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett. Now, he’s going to have to get used to passing to guys like Jerry Jeudy and Tim Patrick. But hey, at least he has someone like Javonte Williams that he can turn to, right? It’s not like the AFC West has an elite defensive front. Joey Bosa and Khalil “Sack Attack” Mack? “Mad” Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones? What a joke. Let’s face it. When he’s not handing the ball off to Williams or Melvin Gordon, he’ll be running for his life outside the pocket. It’s a good thing that he’s still that electric, dual-threat quarterback we all know and love. Clocking in at an astonishing 183 rushing yards last season, Wilson outpaced players like Ke’Shawn Vaughn and Godwin Igwebuike. (Ig-we-byu-kay) Don’t worry though, what he can’t get in rushing yards, he can’t get in passing yards, either.

Throwing for just over 3100 passing yards last season, it’s a miracle that he even made a Pro Bowl. But then again, who else is going to play in Tom Brady’s place as an NFC alternate? Jalen Hurts would’ve been nice to see. Jalen Hurts should’ve been selected, and he had more passing and rushing yards than Wilson. Unlike Wilson, Hurts made it to the playoffs with a mediocre offense. But at the end of the day, where else would you rather be in January than the 2021 Pro Bowl in Las Vegas? I’m pretty sure Tom Brady and Matt Stafford would’ve traded places with Wilson in a heartbeat. That’s another topic that we need to bring to attention. If Russell Wilson can’t even finish third in the NFC West, how does he expect to survive the Wild, Wild AFC West?

Surviving the Wild, Wild, West…

I’m not saying that Russell Wilson was a bad pickup for the Denver Broncos. I like Russell Wilson, but I think people have overhyped him the past couple of years. Half the head coaches in the league would settle for one of Russell Wilson’s “down years”. If your team is struggling to finish with a winning record, a guy like Wilson can definitely help with that. Now if your team is in need of a Super Bowl, well, that’s a different story. Top five quarterbacks are a significant difference maker for an NFL team. Russell Wilson is not a top five quarterback anymore. If you would’ve asked me about Russ joining the Broncos five years ago, I’d be giving you a very different answer right now. No Patrick Mahomes? No Justin Herbert? I like those odds of Wilson finding success in this division. But now? You could argue that Wilson, a future Hall of Famer, is the worst QB of the the four. Let that sink in. One of the league’s best quarterbacks to ever play the game is the worst. The only reason why I’m not saying Derek Carr is the worst, is because statistically, he’s not. 2021 was not kind to Russell Wilson. All of these quarterbacks are ranked inside the top 15/top 10 in the NFL. To be the worst shouldn’t have a negative connotation in this sense. It should instead give you an idea of how tough this division will be next year.

One Last Ride for the Denver Bronco…

Russell Wilson is a future Hall of Fame player that’s past his prime. Every now and then he’ll show flashes of his younger self, but can he stay healthy and perform at 100% for an entire season? Remember, there’s a reason Seattle wanted to trade him away. He’s getting older now, and if you’re an NFL GM, older doesn’t bring in the big bucks. An older player will bring in leadership, but it’s up to the surrounding cast around him to put on a show. Denver is going to have a winning record, no doubt about it. They will improve, but they’re not going to win the AFC West. Keep in mind, the Broncos finished last in their division last season. This year, with new faces and a strong Denver defense, we might actually see all four teams make it to the playoffs this year. That’s how competitive this division really is. All I’m saying is that it’s pretty hard to go from worst to first in one season, especially in this division.
