The Celtics started out the new season with two straight losses, but they’ve bounced back and won four of their last five ahead of Wednesday’s home game against the Utah Jazz. Who have been the key contributors to the cause so far? You’ve got to start with Paul Pierce, who’s really taken over and become the nightly scoring threat we were accustomed to seeing. Pierce is averaging a team-best 20.8 points per game and is also chipping elsewhere, averaging 6.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.50 steals per contest as well. Then there’s his trusty old pal, Kevin Garnett, who continues to be effective despite a dip in minutes. KG is averaging 16.0 points and 8.7 rebounds so far this season and continues to play some of the NBA’s best defense in the post. Plus, Garnett’s tenacity and intensity rubs off on his teammates and makes them all more involved as well. The final part of the new Big Three is Rajon Rondo, and he keeps making play after play. Rondo not only is averaging 14.7 points a contest, but he’s dishing out 13.3 rebounds and hauling down 4.5 rebounds per game too. Throw in almost two steals a game and you can see why the Celtics did everything in their power to keep Rondo around Boston. The others making a difference include new signings Jason Terry (11.7 PPG) and Courtney Lee (25.2 minutes per game), while Brandon Bass, Jeff Green and Jared Sullinger are also logging significant minutes for Doc Rivers this season. While the Celtics have enjoyed a decent start to the season, if you’ve been backing them with your NBA picks, you haven’t been too pleased. They’ve covered the spread in only two of their seven games so far. Maybe they’ll start being profitable again soon, and those Big Three would be the reason why.
