Detroit Lions Release Veteran Wide Receiver Amid Roster Cuts
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions are making their final roster cuts before the start of the 2024 regular season along with every other team around the league. The Lions are coming off of one of their best seasons in franchise history in 2023, getting to the NFC Championship game, and are looking to make another step forward this season. However, with these roster cuts, the team had to release one of its veteran wide receivers.

Detroit Lions Release Receiver

Detroit has released veteran wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones as of Monday to make room for their final 53-man roster. Peoples-Jones is a Detroit native and just completed his fourth season in the NFL which could make him a popular free-agent target for other teams.

Peoples-Jones Career

The veteran was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL draft, and was traded to the Lions last season in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick. Head coach Dan Campbell seemed optimistic of the move, but took a little while to come to the final decision to cut the receiver.

I do feel like [Brad Holmes and I are] very much on the same page, and we’re both very much ‘Let’s make sure we both feel this way when we wake up and we talk later.’ It’s a good process, and here we go. We’re on year four of this.

Will The Veteran Sign Before The Regular Season?

Since joining the league in 2020, Peoples-Jones has amounted to 1,895 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, notching 122 catches for an average of 15.5 yards per reception. His best season came in 2022 while he was still in Cleveland, going for 839 receiving yards with three touchdowns. While he hasn’t been the first option to look to for quarterbacks, he serves as a decent threat with his experience on the field.

Do you think Peoples-Jones will sign with a new team before the start of the regular season?
