PHOENIX — The Arizona Cardinals are prioritizing grit over glitz in the 2026 offseason. General Manager Monti Ossenfort continued a defensive makeover Monday, signing former Patriots linebacker Jack Gibbens to a two-year contract. The move comes just weeks after the franchise made the franchise-altering decision to release quarterback Kyler Murray, signaling a total cultural reset under new head coach Mike LaFleur.

Super Bowl Experience Hits the Desert

Gibbens isn’t just another body for the rotation. He arrives in Arizona fresh off a deep postseason run with New England, including a start in Super Bowl 60 against Seattle. After entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2022, Gibbens forced his way into a starting role by 2025. Last season, he racked up 81 total tackles, one sack, and a forced fumble across 17 regular-season games.

He joins a linebacker room led by Mack Wilson Sr., but don’t expect Gibbens to settle for a backup role. His rise from a practice squad hopeful to a Super Bowl starter defines his career. Arizona needs that edge. The defense struggled last year, and Ossenfort is betting that Gibbens’ nose for the ball will fix the leaks in the middle of the field.

Reinforcing the Trenches

The Gibbens signing is part of a larger, coordinated strike on the free-agent market. Arizona also locked up defensive tackle Andrew Billings on a one-year deal. Billings, a 31-year-old veteran, recorded 31 tackles and six tackles for loss with Chicago last season. He will pair with Roy Lopez, who returned to Arizona on a two-year, $11.5 million contract after a stint in Detroit.

  • Jack Gibbens: 2-year deal (LB)
  • Roy Lopez: 2-year, $11.5M deal (DT)
  • Andrew Billings: 1-year deal (DT)
  • Andrew Wingard: 1-year, $3M deal (S)

By adding free safety Andrew Wingard—formerly of the Jaguars—the Cardinals have effectively rebuilt their spine. Wingard brings a veteran presence to a secondary that must support a young, post-Murray offense. LaFleur is clearly building from the back forward, ensuring the 2026 Cardinals are harder to play against than the 3-14 squad from a year ago.

“I’m here to work. This team is going through a massive change, and I want to be the guy that sets the tone on every snap. Being in the Super Bowl last month taught me what winning looks like. We’re bringing that standard to Phoenix.”

Draft Outlook: The Next Phase

With the defense taking shape, all eyes shift to the 2026 NFL Draft. Arizona holds the No. 3 overall pick. With Kyler Murray gone and the defense seeing heavy investment, the choice seems clear: find the new face of the franchise at quarterback or snag a generational tackle like Francis Mauigoa to protect whoever takes the snaps. The foundation is set. Now, LaFleur needs a cornerstone.
