At a time when the entire world is dealing with the COVID-19 epidemic, professional sports teams are stepping up to help others in a time of need. Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan became the latest sports figure to help fight against COVID-19 with an incredible donation.
The Jaguars announced on Tuesday that Khan is pledging $1 million towards northeast Florida’s COVID-19 response relief efforts. The money will go towards multiple organizations that are helping provide support to communities in need during the ongoing crisis.
The $1 million will be divided amongst five organizations. Florida’s First Coast Relief Funds will receive $400,000. The donation will help provide multiple nonprofits with the support they need to provide for children, families, veterans and seniors during the ongoing crisis.
Khan will donate $75,000 to Feeding Northeast Florida, which helps provide food to those in the community experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 epidemic. As part of the donation, $75,000 will also go to The Clara White Mission, which ensures that the homeless population in Jacksonville receives food and care.
The Jacksonville Public Education Fund will receive $50,000 from the Jaguars owner. The money will help cover the cost of supplies and technology for teachers and students, with schools shutting down and moving to online-based teaching. An additional $50,000 will be donated to the local American Red Cross to help further support blood drives.
Khan joins five NFL owners that have donated at least $1 million toward relief efforts. Arizona Cardinals pledged $1 million on Tuesday to help fund the state’s COVID-19 relief fund. Cleveland Browns’ owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam pledged $1.5 million towards Ohio’s COVID-19 relief efforts on Monday.
According to the latest information from Johns Hopkins University, more than 50,000 people in the United States have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Tuesday morning.
