The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on the brink of a monumental shift as it gears up to introduce some of its most powerful characters yet. With ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ to kick off the next phase, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ looming as an epic climax, theories are coming in full force.

One of the most intriguing theories is the idea that Doctor Doom might first appear as a hero. However, only to fall after facing Galactus.

Robert Downey Jr. Hints At A Heroic Doctor Doom Debut

In a surprising twist for Marvel fans, Robert Downey Jr., who previously gave life to the beloved Tony Stark, is now stepping into the dark, complex shoes of Doctor Doom. And while Doom is traditionally known as one of Marvel’s greatest villains, RDJ’s recent Instagram post suggests a radically different beginning for the character.

The photo, captioned as his “Doom workstation essentials,” showed off an interesting array of items. However, what caught the eyes of fans was a specific comic by Jonathan Hickman. This Doom-centric one-shot portrays Doctor Doom as a reluctant hero. In this storyline he goes up against Galactus in a desperate attempt to save the universe.

The cosmic giant known as Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, is set to play a central role in ‘First Steps’. Early trailers and leaks suggest that the Fantastic Four exist in an alternate reality which is to be consumed by Galactus. Additionally, according to fan speculation, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm flee to Earth-616. They escape just before their homeworld is destroyed. ‘Thunderbolts*’ post-credits scene hinted at this dramatic migration.

One of the richest dynamics in Marvel history is the rivalry-turned-enmity between Reed Richards and Doctor Doom. In the comics, it’s a relationship filled with intellectual competition, philosophical divides, and personal vendettas. If ‘First Steps’ introduces Doom as a peer or even an ally to Reed making it a lot more intriguing.

Additionally, this relationship will likely be key to shaping the narrative arc that leads into ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. It will possibly pulling Doom away from heroism and into the realm of multiversal conquest. Adding more layers to the mix is the confirmed presence of Sue and Reed’s child, Franklin Richards.

This name holds massive weight in Marvel lore. Franklin is not just any child; he’s one of the most powerful mutants in the entire Marvel universe. Vanessa Kirby, who plays Sue Storm, recently teased this powerful element in an interview. “It’s not just adults that have superpowers,” she said, hinting that Franklin may play a pivotal role even as a baby.

As fans prepare for the film, the idea that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom might debut not as a villain, but as a failed hero, adds emotional resonance. His defeat by Galactus would serve not only as a humbling introduction but also as the motivation for his descent into darkness. By the time ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives, we may see a Doctor Doom who has transformed completely.
