New York Jets running back Breece Hall is one of the biggest names on the trade block, and the Los Angeles Chargers could use another running back. After entering the season with veteran Najee Harris and first-round pick Omarion Hampton leading the backfield, injuries forced Jim Harbaugh’s squad to turn to backups Kimani Vidal and Hassan Haskins over the past few weeks.
With the trade deadline just days away, NFL Network’s Kevin Patra believes the Chargers should boost their running back room by acquiring Breece Hall. At 1-7, the New York Jets already began their fire sale with the Michael Carter trade and should be open to offers for their star running back.
“Hall has proven dynamic in the run and passing game. He would add a home run threat for Justin Herbert,” Patra writes. “Hall ranks fourth in the NFL with 18 runs of 10-plus yards, per Next Gen Stats. Herbert and Vidal are tied for the most among Chargers with eight.”
A Breece Hall trade would make quite a bit of sense if Omarion Hampton were sidelined for the entire season. While he is currently on the injured reserve, the UNC product should return in the immediate future and should regain control of the backfield. In five healthy contests, the rookie recorded 314 yards and two touchdowns on 66 attempts to go along with 20 receptions for 136 yards on 22 targets.
Additionally, Kimani Vidal has emerged as a capable running back. While he lacks the explosive ceiling of guys like Hampton and Hall, he’s more than capable of being the second fiddle in this attack. In Hampton’s absence, the former sixth-round pick has recorded 279 yards and one touchdown on 54 attempts.
Breece Hall is a great running back, but the Chargers don’t need to trade for him. Hall is easily the best running back on the trade block, and Los Angeles only needs a backup. Rather than giving up a decent pick for Hall, they should send a late-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Jerome Ford.
